Emeritus Professor Beverley Glass Legacy Award for Distinguished Impact in Pharmacy

Emeritus Professor Beverley D Glass, currently Adjunct Professor in Pharmacy and Emeritus Professor at James Cook University has had a career in teaching across the Pharmaceutical Sciences to Pharmacy Practice and has supervised both Honours and Postgraduate Students in her research programme. Her research interests have focussed in applied pharmaceutical sciences on the stability of drugs, their storage shelf-life and expiry with special emphasis on the effects of repackaging drugs in Dose Administration Aids. This together with interests in the effects of modifying solid dosage forms by crushing tablets or the compounding of oral liquids for administration to children and those patients unable to swallow tablets or capsules, highlights her research focus of empowering pharmacists to ensure the delivery of quality medicines. Beverley has shifted her focus in recent years to pursue a research passion, where the pharmacist is front and centre in the delivery of health services ensuring patients’ access to these services, especially in rural and remote communities to improve their health outcomes.  She has achieved her research outcomes through being privileged to supervise both community- and hospital-based postgraduate students in areas such as medication safety, kidney transplantation, and vaccinations in cancer patents in the hospital setting. In community, her research has focused on expanding pharmacy services in rural communities including in mental health and exploring collaborative care models involving patients, carers, and health professionals in managing their chronic disease. This translation of research into practice has been recognized by the peak body for pharmacists, the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) by the awarding of a Fellowship and Lifetime Achievement Award. Professor Glass, having been instrumental in the establishment of the Pharmacy Program at James Cook University, which has significantly impacted pharmacy workforce in northern Australia was also recognised by the PSA being awarded Queensland’s highest honour for a pharmacist, The Bowl of Hygeia, in acknowledgment of the development and ongoing direction of the Pharmacy program at James Cook University.  She has held positions of Head of Discipline and School of Pharmacy and Molecular Sciences, Associate Dean for Research Education in the College of Medicine and Dentistry and Deputy Dean of the Graduate Research School at James Cook University. Beverley has published over 300 peer reviewed articles, supervised over 50 postgraduate research students and continues to contribute significantly to the profession of pharmacy in Australia and internationally.

The Award: Beverley feels strongly that her legacy is not in what she personally has achieved but in the over 3000 pharmacy students she has mentored and taught, the honours and postgraduate students that she has supervised who allowed her to  share her passion for research, her colleagues over the years, many of whose postgraduate degrees she has supervised   and the  community and hospital pharmacists with whom she has collaborated and  continue to inspire her so that her research is relevant to practice.

• 2027 - onwards previous recipient will act as Pharmacy Community member.

Award Conditions

• Certificate framed
• Recipients are required to attend the event in person
• Recipient would provide the keynote address at the annual JCU Pharmacy Welcome to the Profession and Awards night.
• Recipient is to participate as the Community member on the selection committee the following year.
