History of the prize
This prize was founded in 1972 by Mr H Neil Smith with a donation of $700. It has been augmented from 1992 with an annual donation from the Townsville Bulletin. The prize is awarded to the undergraduate student who submits a short story of not more than 2000 words, judged to the best submitted in the particular year.
