Dr Hugh Lavery AM is one of James Cook University’s earliest doctoral graduates and a highly distinguished environmental scientist whose career has shaped conservation practice, environmental policy and sustainable development across Australia and internationally. Spanning more than six decades, his work reflects a rare combination of scientific rigour, applied policy expertise and visionary leadership.

As the founding Director of Research and Planning for the Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service, Hugh played a pivotal role in establishing conservation planning frameworks that continue to influence protected area management today. He went on to found Australian Environment International, providing strategic environmental advice to major government and corporate clients around the world, including long-term work with Australia’s largest corporate landholder. His career also includes senior academic appointments in Australia and internationally, contributing to the development of environmental systems thinking across multiple disciplines.

Hugh’s contributions extend well beyond practice into scholarship and public education. He has authored an extensive body of work spanning scientific publications, technical books and documentary films, advancing understanding of conservation science and ecological design. His influential writing advocates evidence-based approaches to environmental management and has informed both professional practice and public discourse.

A recognised leader in his field, Hugh has played a central role in shaping professional standards for environmental practitioners across Australasia. He was selected as inaugural Certified Environmental Practitioner of the Year for Australia and New Zealand in 2007 and has also been recognised nationally through his appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia.

His legacy endures through the systems, scholarship and professional standards that continue to guide environmental practice today.
