Intercampus Mobility Procedure
Intent
This Procedure supports the Coursework Enrolment Policy and details the opportunities available to James Cook University (JCU; the University) students to experience studying at a different JCU campus, either temporarily or permanently. It aims to encourage students to take advantage of this unique opportunity to gain a global perspective which complements their home campus study experience.
This Procedure addresses Higher Education Standards Framework (HESF) Standards 1.2 and 1.3.6.
Scope
This Procedure applies to all eligible JCU coursework students, including Brisbane and Singapore, enrolled at an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Level 7 or higher.
Definitions
Except where otherwise indicated in this procedure, the definitions used in this procedure are found in the Policy Glossary.
Home Campus Enrolments Team: means the following teams, depending on the student’s Home Campus:
- Singapore campus: Enrolments Team at enrolments-singapore@jcu.edu.au
- Brisbane Campus: Enrolments Team at enrolments@jcub.edu.au
- JCU campuses and study centres excluding Singapore and Brisbane: Academic Administration and Enrolment Team at enrolments@jcu.edu.au
Home Campus: The JCU campus where a student begins their study.
Host Campus: The JCU campus where the student temporarily transfers for study.
Procedure
1. Intercampus Exchange Program (Temporary Transfer)
The Intercampus Exchange Program is an opportunity for eligible JCU students to study part of their course at any JCU campus (excluding Brisbane).
1.1 Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Intercampus Exchange Program, a student must:
- be admitted to coursework program which is AQF Level 7 or higher;
- have an Academic Status of Satisfactory;
- be a minimum of 18 years old;
- not be a student debtor;
- have been awarded a passing result in a minimum of 9 credit points of study at their Home Campus; and
- be continuing in the same course of study and majors as the proposed Host Campus, dependent on course availability.
1.2 Application and Approval process
1.2.1 Students must apply through the Global Experience Portal (JCU Australia) or by lodging an Intercampus Exchange Application Form (Singapore campus).
1.2.2 Applications must be submitted by the published due dates.
1.2.3 Subjects must be available at the Host Campus in the proposed Study Periods/Trimesters/Teaching Period/Semester, align with the student’s course and major requirements, and fit within their study plan.
1.2.4 The study load for each Intercampus Exchange must comply with the Host Campus' legislative requirements and align with clause 3 of the Coursework Enrolment Procedure (Study Load Requirements).
1.2.5 A student may undertake a maximum of 27 credit points of their course of study with Intercampus Exchange. If a student wishes to extend their Intercampus Exchange beyond 27 credit points, they must complete a campus transfer request on the appropriate campus form.
1.2.6 Students undertaking Intercampus Exchange must comply with Visa and Immigration and Checkpoints Authority requirements.
1.2.7 To participate in Intercampus Exchange, a student:
a. with a Home Campus in Australia must have completed their participation agreement in the Global Experience Portal, and signed and returned their Singapore campus student contract for the Intercampus Exchange Program; or
b. with a Home Campus of Singapore must have signed and returned their Leave of Absence application for the Intercampus Exchange arrangement, along with their JCU Australia offer letter; and
c. at the time their Intercampus Exchange commences, continue to meet progression requirements; and
d. must hold the appropriate Visa, which allows them to study at the Host Campus.
1.2.8 Approval to participate in the Intercampus Exchange Program is required from the Course Coordinator (JCU Australia) or Senior Director, Academic Services and Progressions, or Manager, Enrolments (Singapore campus).
1.3 Fees and Charges
1.3.1 For the period of the Intercampus Exchange Program, all fees and charges will be charged by and payable to the Home Campus, with the exception of the Overseas Health Cover which is payable to the Host Campus.
1.3.2 Additional costs (e.g., travel, accommodation, Visa) are the student’s responsibility.
1.3.3 Commonwealth Supported students may apply for OS-HELP for overseas exchanges under the OS-HELP Loans Procedure.
2. Campus Transfer (Permanent Mobility)
A Campus Transfer occurs when a student permanently changes their Home Campus between JCU campuses and study centres. A Campus Transfer is available to all students admitted to a course, provided they meet the eligibility criteria and their course and required subjects as outlined in the Course and Subject Handbook are offered at the campus they are transferring to.
A Campus Transfer is not required for Australian domestic students changing locations between Cairns and Townsville campuses.
2.1 Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for a Campus Transfer, a student must:
- have no financial sanctions at their current Home Campus;
- have no sanctions that will prevent enrolment or placement;
- have a continuing enrolment with the University from the previous Teaching Period/Semester/Study Period/Trimester;
- must have a published result for at least one coursework subject in their current course of study at the current Home Campus (Australian domestic students only);
- have completed at least 9 credit points at their Home Campus with published results (Singaporean domestic students and international students only); and
- have an Academic Status of Satisfactory or Academic Caution, with conditions outlined in the Unsatisfactory Academic Performance Procedure.
2.2 Application and Approval Process
2.2.1 It is the student’s responsibility to consider the impact that a Campus Transfer will have on their course progression by discussing their study plans with their Enrolments Team.
2.2.2 Students can apply using the Campus Transfer Application by the published deadlines.
2.2.3 The Enrolments Team from the proposed Home Campus will assess the student’s eligibility.
2.2.4 The Admissions Team from the proposed Home Campus will determine the outcome of the Campus Transfer Application and communicate the outcome to the student. International students will receive a new offer to study.
2.2.5 Approval for a Campus Transfer applies only to the specific course(s) indicated in the communication sent to the student.
2.3 Fees and Charges
2.3.1 Campus Transfer between Australian and overseas campuses may affect fees payable by the student.
2.3.2 Students seeking to transfer to or from the Singapore or Brisbane campuses should refer to the relevant sections of the Student Fee Payments and Refunds Policy and related Procedures for information on applicable fees.
2.3.3 Commonwealth Supported students transferring to Singapore are not eligible for Commonwealth Support and will be required to pay the full tuition fee amount.
2.3.4 Students transferring to the Brisbane campus will only be eligible for Commonwealth Support where it is available. Where Commonwealth Support is not available, the student will be required to pay the full tuition fee amount.
