Cyber Security Hub Cyber Compass

Cyber Compass for students

Cyber Compass is JCU’s cyber awareness campaign for students, launching during O-Week 2026. It focuses on real-world cyber risks students face, using lived experience rather than theory.

Why Cyber Compass was developed

In the JCU Cyber team we get that digital life is real life. Students are expected to study, work, connect, and build their future online - often without clear guidance. Cyber Compass was developed to give students a practical, non-boring framework for navigating scams, privacy, identity, and online decision-making with confidence.

It focuses on choice over shame, awareness over fear, and helps students pause to ask: Can I? Should I? How? — with their future self in mind.

How Cyber Compass was developed

We started by talking to students at every opportunity: around campus, at events and in the campus cafes - and actually listening. Their experiences, pressures, and questions shaped Cyber Compass from the ground up. It’s built around lived experiences, not assumptions, and designed to reflect what students face every day online.

To bring Cyber Compass to life, we knew we needed a cyber expert who truly understands students - not just cyber risk. We partnered with Chantelle Ralevska from Psyber. Chantelle brings a deep understanding of human behaviour, storytelling, and the realities of online life, delivering cyber education that is practical, engaging, and anything but boring.

Meet the Presenter

Chantelle Ralevska is a trusted voice in cybersecurity, recognised for her fresh, fearless, and innovative approach to training.

After protecting some of Australia’s largest and most complex organisations - including Macquarie Group, Westpac, and Woolworths - Chantelle identified a critical gap: best-practice security awareness wasn’t reaching far enough.

She founded Psyber to change that. Her mission is bold: to empower one million Australians with the skills and confidence to stay cyber safe. She has spoken on podcasts alongside leading Australian voices, including Shark Tank’s Nick Bell and cybersecurity influencer Abed Hamden, and her story has been featured by outlets such as Women’s Agenda.
