SES Response to Student Feedback
To demonstrate our commitment to responding transparently to student feedback, we have instituted a webpage to report a summary of responses to student feedback provided in the YourJCU surveys. Subject coordinators provide a description in each subject outline (section 1.5) of changes made to the subject on the basis of feedback from the previous delivery, but students have commented that it is easier to understand a response to feedback on the delivery of the subject that they have just completed. So this year we have instituted this report of last semester’s feedback and the subject coordinator’s response to that, which will be implemented in the next delivery.

Teaching Period 2, 2024 Feedback
BM1062 Anatomy and Physiology for Sport and Exercise Science 2
- Would like to have the tutorials taught as one cohort instead of together with BM1032. Response: this is a time management issue with staffing multiple tutorials that cover the same content.
- Change group assessment into individual assessment task. Response: we will be changing the group assessment to individual assessments.
- An app was suggested to create a better communication line between lecturers and students. Response: we have padlet available, however students don’t seem to interactive much with it. We can try to open padlet during workshop sessions so students are reminded and encouraged further to post questions and resources they find useful into it.
HS1401 Health and Health Care in Australia
- 21 responses received.
- We offer a flexible tutorial delivery (can choose online, in-person or recorded tutorial), however several did not know they could go to the face-to-face option. Response: we already sign-post this with our intro video, LearnJCU tutorial description and via scheduling services. In SP2 2025 will provide more communication about the oncampus option in Week 1 tutorials.
- Some comments on the difficulty of the exam – however we had a good range of grades (and a very low% of fails). Continue to review assessment questions as part of quality assurance.
SP1002 Nutrition for Health and Physical Activity
- Positive feedback received about the engaging materials.
- Improvements to the structure of the subject will be made (e.g. introduction of tutorials and lecture recordings) for 2025 and beyond.
Teaching Period 1, 2024 Feedback
PY1101 Exploring Psychology 1
A comment from your Associate Dean:
Thankyou all for your feedback. I regret that we do not have a Subject Coordinator allocated yet to this subject for next year, so it is not relevant to provide a response from the previous coordinator. However, we can still address concerns raised in the survey responses. Once they are allocated to the subject I will be requiring the new coordinator to action the following points before the next subject delivery:
- review of the nature and scope of the assessment tasks and timing in relation to the study period and other assessment in other subjects,
- if the critical literature review remains as an a assessment item, provide more supporting information to assist students with preparing this assignment
- provide lectures online as shorter podcasts instead of having live lectures,
- review the amount of detail and relevance of content,
- ensure that feedback and assessment is returned within 10 university working days,
- provide practice questions for the exam.
We are also looking into scheduling options for the face to face and online tutes so that students have flexibility in attending classes, this is a work in progress and we are liaising with Scheduling Services about tutes.
SP1003 Communication for Sport and Exercise Science and Exercise Physiology (Clinical)
- Students indicated that the in-person workshops and clear topics were the best aspects of the subject. The assessments were reported as lacking relevance to the industry.
- The feedback received has been noted and further clarification of the assessment requirements and the connection to practical settings will be provided. E.g. Being able to undertake database searching and synthesize the literature translates to evidence-based practice.
SP1011 Physical Activity for Health
- Overall students appreciated the hands-on nature of practical classes and discussions related to application of knowledge and skills to future profession.
- In response to feedback, more class time will be allocated to revising the theoretical knowledge required.
- There was a suggestion to deliver lectures on-campus. Previously, these lectures were live and on-campus however they were poorly attended and students indicated a preference for lecture recordings.
SP2007 Physiological Basis for Exercise and Sport
- The report doesn't need to be a group assignment. Response: The report enables students to develop their key teamwork skills that are crucial for those working in the profession.
- Making practical classes compulsory, which will help with the content within them. Response: Participation in all classes will continue to be recommended to all students but not enforced to provide flexibility to students with their learning and activities outside of JCU (i.e. life demands).
SP2201 Exercise Prescription
- Case study was too large. Response: The volume of work will be reduced by taking out a table detailing the client history.
- The answers to the workshop needs to be uploaded after each workshop instead of at the end of the semester. Response: Answers will be provided after each week of the workshop.
- There is not enough time to write everything down in the workshop since most of the time is spent on doing the questions before getting to the prescriptions. Response: The workshop questions will be changed to focus more on prescription rather than the lecture content.
- Doing more of the partner coaching sessions on Friday. Response: More practical classes will be replaced with classroom-based workshops to enhance the student’s practical experience of delivering exercises to peers.
- Clarification around particular case study assignment for the client. Response: A structured template will be provided for students to access.
- Exam examples can be provided. Response: The workshop questions will be reviewed and amended to better reflect the exam questions.
- More time taken to discuss assessment items. Response: A video recording will be uploaded detaining the expectations of the assessment.
SP3008 Practicum in Sport and Exercise Science/Clinical Exercise Physiology
- Having a variety of placement opportunities was described as the best aspect of the subject. Not having access to the JCU EP clinic was identified as an area for improvement, however due to operational demands, the EP clinic will remain closed until further notice.
- Students will have access to a variety of EP clinics across QLD.
SP3015 Advanced Motor Learning and Motor Control
- Some students were unsatisfied with the organisation of the subject, the delivery methods and the assessment activities to help them better understand the subject material. In response, most of the learning content will be uploaded at the beginning of the semester to ensure students are able to access the material and make better sense of the subject and video recordings will be uploaded detailing expectations of the assessment which will enhance the online delivery methods for this subject.
