Policy

The following represent the prescribed academic dress standards in respect of officers and graduates of the University.

Chancellor

Bonnet

Blue velvet bonnet with gold tassel.

Gown

Dark blue cool wool fabric with gold braid and fabric trim.

Vice-Chancellor and President

Bonnet

Blue velvet bonnet with silver tassel.

Gown

Dark blue cool wool fabric with silver braid and fabric trim.

Deputy Chancellor

Bonnet

Dark blue velvet bonnet with gold tassel.

Gown

Dark blue cool wool fabric with two narrow strips of gold braid.

Members of Council

Cap

Black trencher with silver tassel.

Gown

Black Cambridge-style Masters with front panel of silver satin. Black Oxford-style hood fully lined with silver satin.

Chairperson of the Academic Board

Bonnet

Black velvet bonnet with a red cord and tassel.

Gown

Red gown (PhD red) with facings and lining of royal blue (PhD blue)

Honorary Doctor of the University

Bonnet

Tudor bonnet of royal blue velvet with gold cord around crown with two small gold tassels.

Gown

Royal blue Cambridge-style  Doctor of Philosophy gown with front facings and sleeve linings in gold satin. Royal Blue Oxford-style hood fully lined in gold satin.

Honorary Doctorate honoris causa

Bonnet

Tudor bonnet of royal blue velvet with gold cord around crown with two small gold tassels.

Gown

Royal blue Cambridge-style Doctor of Philosophy gown with facings and linings in canard blue satin with a gold satin edging stripe on the outside facings. Royal Blue Oxford-style hood fully lined in blue satin with a satin gold edging stripe.

Honorary Doctorate

Bonnet

Tudor bonnet of royal blue velvet with gold cord around crown with two small gold tassels.

Gown

Royal blue Cambridge-style Doctor of Philosophy gown with facings and linings in blue satin. Royal Blue Oxford-style hood fully lined in blue satin.

Fellow of the University

Bonnet

Royal blue trencher with a royal blue tassel.

Gown

Royal blue Cambridge-Style Doctor of Philosophy gown with facings in blue satin (sleeves not lined).  Blue satin-lined hood in royal blue (reverse of the Honorary Doctorate).

Higher Doctorate

Bonnet

Tudor bonnet of royal blue velvet with an under trim of gold satin. A gold cord around crown with two small gold tassels.

Gown

Royal blue fabric with facings and linings of faille of ‘doctor’s red’. Hood of the same fabric as the gown with the same red faille. A gold edging stripe on the gold facings, hood and sleeves.

Doctor of Philosophy

Bonnet

Tudor bonnet of royal blue velvet with gold cord around crown with two small gold tassels.

Gown

Cambridge design gown of royal blue fabric with facings and sleeve linings of faille of ‘doctor’s red’. Hood of same fabric as gown lined with same red faille. Sleeves caught with gold cord and blue button.

Professional Doctorate by Research

Bachelor Honours

Black Cambridge-style undergraduate gown. Black Oxford-style hood fully lined with blue satin with an edging strip in gold satin.

Bachelor

Diploma/Certificate

Black Cambridge-style undergraduate gown, no hood is worn

Cultural Sash

Students who identify as Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander are entitled to wear a cultural sash that identifies their cultural heritage as being Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander or both.

Students from outside of Australia who identify as Indigenous or First nations People are entitled to wear a cultural sash or accoutrement that identifies their cultural heritage.

Any proposals to change the prescribed standards of academic dress should be submitted to the Awards and Ceremonies Committee for approval.
