Intent

To specify the criteria for granting of the title of Professor Emeritus.

Scope

All potential candidates eligible for the title of Professor Emeritus.

Definitions

Professor Emeritusis a prestigious title which may be accorded to Professors who on retirement or resignation meet the criteria for the granting of the title.

Policy

1. Retirement

Council will consider the granting of the title of Professor Emeritus to a Professor of the University:

a. If, on retirement, the Professor meets the following criteria:

  • has occupied a Chair in the University or a position with the rank and title of Professor, for a minimum period of ten years;
  • has, during that period, given distinguished academic service significantly above and beyond the level of service normally expected of a Professor to the scholarly community and/or to the University community; and

b. If that Professor is subsequently recommended for the granting of such title by the Vice Chancellor, after the latter has received the advice of the Vice Chancellor’s Advisory Committee.

2. Resignation

Council will consider the granting of the title of Professor Emeritus to a Professor of the University:

a. If, on resignation, a Professor meets or will meet the criteria stated in 1a above; and

b. If that Professor is recommended for the granting of the title of Professor Emeritus by the Vice Chancellor, after the latter has received the advice of the Vice Chancellor’s Advisory Committee, on the grounds that the granting of such title to such person would not be inappropriate having regard to that person's likely future career.

3. Special Circumstances

Irrespective of 1 and 2 above, Council will consider the granting of the title of Professor Emeritus to any former Professor of the University in circumstances which it deems to be special, if recommended by the Vice Chancellor and the Awards and Ceremonies Committee.

4. Withdrawal of Grant of Title of Professor Emeritus

Council may, at any time and without giving any reason, withdraw its previously given grant of the title of Professor Emeritus to any person.
