Intent

The Advisor of the Year Awards aim to encourage and reward staff who excel in their role as a Higher Degree by Research Advisor.

Scope

This procedure applies to research staff who supervise higher degree by research candidates.

Definitions

Research Supervision includes the range of support activities involved in assisting Research Higher Degree candidates to undertake successful original research and to complete a thesis, dissertation or other research products.

Procedure

A) Each year higher degree by research recent graduates will be asked that if wish to make a nomination in any of the following categories:

  1. Primary Advisor of the Year
  2. Advisory Panel Member of the Year Award
  3. Advisory Panel of the Year

B) Each year higher degree research graduates and advisors will be asked that if they wish to make a nomination in any of the following categories:

  1. Advisory Community Photographic Award of the Year
  2. Excellence in Promoting Industry Engagement in Graduate Research of the Year Award

C) Each year Associate Deans Research Education will be asked that if they wish to nominate advisors for the Excellence in Graduate Research Leadership Award

Nomination Process

A) Nominations are made via the Award Nomination Form. NOMINATIONS CLOSE 31 JULY annually.

B) Prior to the list of nominees being presented to the Selection Committee for consideration, the Graduate Research School will send the list of nominees:

  1. to the Chief of Staff for any advice that may be appropriate.
  2. to the Associate Deans Research Education requesting they confirm eligibility of nominees and where there is more than one nominee in a category rank them for their nominated award

C) On request, the Graduate Research School will provide data on Advisors to supplement applications supported by the ADREs/College Deans/Divisional DVCs.

Selection Criteria

A) Advisor of the Year Award Criteria - Primary Advisor of the Year

An individual on a panel as Primary Advisor. An advisor registered at Advisor Mentor, Primary Advisor Advanced or Primary Advisor level on the JCU Register of Advisors who may be an adjunct appointee of the University. Nominees must have a track record of successful HDR candidate outcomes and must show outstanding commitment to excellence in research education through the exceptional quality of their HDR supervisory practices.

B) Advisory Panel of the Year

An Advisory Panel that may include at least one Advisor registered at Advisor Mentor level on the JCU Register of Advisors. Nominated Teams must show outstanding commitment to excellence in research education through the exceptional quality of HDR supervisory practices.

C) Advisory Panel Member of the Year

An individual on a panel in any capacity other than Primary Advisor. An advisor registered at Advisor Mentor, Primary Advisor Advanced, Primary Advisor or Secondary Advisor level on the JCU Register of Advisors who may be an adjunct appointee of the University.

Nominee/s must show outstanding commitment to excellence in research education through the exceptional quality of their HDR supervisory practices;

D) Award for Excellence in Promoting Industry Engagement in Graduate Research

An individual or team of HDR advisors on the JCU Register who have initiated or supported innovative and transformational engagement between higher degree research candidates and industry partners OR an Industry partner on an advisory panel who has shown outstanding commitment and engagement to the success of one or more HDR candidates enabling their integration into an industry linked research environment.

E) Award for Excellence in Graduate Research Leadership

An individual academic on the Register of Advisors who demonstrates inspirational and effective leadership in graduate education at College or Divisional level encouraging and embedding collaboration, cross sectoral engagement and high impact and socially beneficial research outcomes.

F) Advisory Community Photographic Award

HDR candidates are invited to work with Advisors to generate an image of their advisory community (including advisors and HDR candidates) that reflects how they successfully work together as a community.

Selection Process

A) The Selection Committee, which is the Research Education Sub Committee will provide an endorsement of the award recipients to the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research, based on the criteria provided, who will present successful nominees with their awards and report their names to the University Council.

B) The Selection Committee reserves the right not to grant any or all of the awards.

C) The number and category of awards will be at the discretion of the Selection Committee in consultation with the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research.

Acceptance of Awards

A) Recipients may elect to receive the award personally, or have the funds directed to a University account, or any combination of the above. Where money is taken personally, taxation is payable on the amount and will be deducted by the University before payment.

B) Previous recipients of any of these awards will be ineligible for these awards for the following two rounds of the award.

C) The minimum amount of research for supervision to be included must be at least 12 credit points.
