Supporting access and informed choice
Outreach programs support students from regional and low socioeconomic (SES) backgrounds to access higher education. While early outreach focused primarily on “raising aspirations,” contemporary practice recognises that structural barriers—such as geographic isolation, limited subject access, financial constraints, and reduced exposure to university environments—significantly shape students’ educational pathways.
Outreach therefore adopts a structural enabling approach. This includes on-campus experiences, school workshops, curriculum enrichment, and community engagement activities that build students’ confidence, academic capability, and understanding of tertiary pathways. The focus is not only on inspiring interest in university, but on actively reducing systemic barriers and supporting informed, achievable transitions to higher education.
What is Outreach & JCU’s approach
Effective outreach programs are evidence-based, student-centred, and tailored to specific cohorts and communities. They value diverse voices, build confidence, aspiration, academic capability, and a sense of belonging, and are delivered through early, sustained, cross-sector collaboration. By partnering with schools and communities, strengthening transitions and pathways, and using relevant communication technologies, outreach reduces structural barriers and supports positive educational outcomes.

Our outreach principles
Outreach approaches that are sustained with early intervention, educative, relational and strengths based are best placed to support student success. At JCU, these principles have been distilled into five inter-related pillars of the outreach framework.
Community-led and owned solutions acknowledge that a one-size-fits-all approach does not work across Australia. Local communities are best placed to understand their own needs and develop solutions that are tailored to their unique circumstances. JCU is committed to working in partnerships with stakeholders to co-design outreach activities.
We are committed to North and Far North QLD. Outreach activities will be informed by consultation and the outreach external reference groups. We celebrate the strength and resilience of the people in our region.
Providing students and community members with educational experiences that builds self- efficacy for university study and demystify university life.
Providing students and community members with careers education that is linked to the Australian Career Development Blueprint (Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, 2022), Skills Classification (Jobs and Skills Australia, 2022) and the Australian Curriculum (where relevant) (ACARA, 2022)
Supporting student improvement in soft and hard skills of academic attainment
Explore how outreach programs are delivered
Our outreach and engagement principles are brought to life through a range of on-campus experiences, in-school programs and access initiatives that support students at different stages of their journey.
