Supporting First Nations students in marine management

From Reef Authority's Sea Country Connections newsletter, February 2024

The Reef Authority's education team is proud to partner with James Cook University (JCU) for the 'Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders in Marine Science' (ATSIMS) Program—an outreach initiative providing First Nations Year 10 students in North Queensland with opportunities to engage in marine science, marine management and Sea Country stewardship.

Last year's program, held at JCU's Townsville campus, welcomed over 85 participants from 13 schools. Featuring workshops led by Reef Authority educators and the TUMRA Director on Reef topics like turtle identification, dangerous and deadly creatures, and crown-of-thorns starfish control, the event highlighted the importance of Indigenous youth involvement in managing and caring for Country.

Traditional Owner groups are encouraged to explore and use the Reef Authority's free education resources in the Reef Guardian Schools portal (free registration) for their educational endeavours.
