AMHRG continually extends and enhances the contribution to mental health research that is built upon the strength and experience of AMHRG experts.
Funded by JCUS-JCUA Cross-Campus Collaboration Grant Scheme 2022, $$19,978 over one year. This study will examine whether physiological and psychological markers at baseline can predict treatment success of a stress intervention in 50 university students, 25 each from JCUA and JCUS.
Funded by the Overseas Distinguished Educators Program 2020 (Funder: The Science and Technology Bureau of Guangdong Province, China), A/Prof Wendy Li, Prof James Dimmock and Prof Caryn West were invited to Foshan University to deliver the “Healthy Ageing and Good Death: Promoting Palliative Care Knowledge among University Students in China” program in October 2021.
This study aims to investigate whether MBSR is efficacious for North Queensland veterans. Research indicates that nearly 50% of Australian Defence Force (ADF) veterans meet diagnostic criteria for a mental disorder, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety and depression. Prolonged exposure therapy, cognitive processing therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy are the most well-studied forms of psychotherapy, which have demonstrated effectiveness for many veterans with PTSD, anxiety and depression. However, about 30-60% patients do not respond well to these treatments, indicating a need for research into alternative treatments for veterans with mental disorders, such as MBSR.
COVID-19 and the associated public health measures, such as quarantine lockdown, the cessation of lockdown, re-lockdown, media coverage of the spread of the virus, have the potential to contribute to psychological fear and anxiety on a global scale. As of 24 September 2021, there have been 230,418,451 confirmed cases of COVID-19 globally, including 4,724,876 deaths, reported to WHO. To overcome the adversity and stress associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, many are able to effectively engage mental resources, such as mindfulness. In this way, mindfulness may act as a buffer against COVID-19 related distress.
COVID-19 has created significant challenges and uncertainties that have substantial effects on people’s psychological wellbeing and mental health. In this unprecedented time AMHRG researchers have actively responded to COVID-19 by initiating and participating in a range of COVID-19 research projects, conferences and community campaigns. Our research explores the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health and wellbeing, while our community activities support our frontline healthcare workers for their dedication to keeping our community safe.
Funded by the Overseas Distinguished Educators Program 2019 (Funder: The Science and Technology Bureau of Guangdong Province, China), A/Prof Wendy Li and Prof Brett McDermott were invited to Foshan University to deliver the Art in Mental Health program.
In 2017, A/Prof Wendy Li and Prof Brett McDermott of the AusAsian Mental Health Research Group (AMHRG) and research partners of Shanxi University and Taiyuan Psychiatric Hospital in China worked together to promote mental health among university students by organising five mental health seminars for university students. More than 1,000 students attended, many of whom showed little knowledge about mental health.
AMHRG members, A/Prof Wendy Li, Dr Smita Singh, Dr Jasleen Chhabra and Quan Zhou, have been awarded a grant from the JCU College of Healthcare Sciences JCUA and JCUS Cross-collaboration scheme to conduct a cross-cultural study on palliative care knowledge. The project aims to investigate palliative care (PC) knowledge in community and university samples in Australia and Singapore and provide empirical evidence to palliative care education for the tropical communities.
Supported by the Asian Association of Social Psychology (AASP), the 2019 Small Group Conference Serving the Underserved in the Tropics: Making a Difference with Positive Psychology was held from June 28-29, 2019 at the beautiful JCU Townsville, Bebegu Yumba campus, Douglas, Australia, and via videoconferencing at JCU Cairns, Nguma-bada campus, Smithfield, Australia or JCU Singapore campus.
Invited and funded by the Tianjin Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, Associate Professor Wendy Li participated in the “High-Level Overseas Talents and Project Fair”, held in Tianjin, China, June 2019, to promote AMHRG’s innovative projects.
