Mayo Lecture

The Mayo Lecture is an annual event run by the College of Business, Law and Governance in conjunction with the James Cook University Law Students Society (JCULSS) in honour of Mrs Marylyn Mayo, JCU's foundation law staff member. The JCULSS instituted the Mayo Lecture in 1991 as a tribute to Marylyn's work in maintaining a law presence at JCU and, ultimately, in establishing the full law degree here.

Recent Mayo Lectures have been delivered by:

  • Justice Lincoln Crowley - Queensland's inaugural First Nations Justice of the Supreme Court.
  • The Honourable Justice Michael Kirby, on the topic 'Nuclear Proliferation and the Singapore Summit: A Challenge to International Law';
  • Mr Anthony Morris QC, on the topic 'Human rights under siege on all sides: The combined onslaught of Terrorism, Political Correctness and the Dictatorship of Bureaucracy';
  • Professor Rosalind Croucher AM, President of the Australian Law Reform Commission, on the topic 'The Common Law and the Protection of Rights, Freedoms and Privileges: Insights from the ALRC Freedoms Inquiry'.

NQ Schools Constitutional Convention for ATSI Students

The annual Queensland Schools Constitutional Conventions are for secondary students of humanities, social sciences and legal studies from the state, catholic and independent schooling sectors.

Queensland Schools Constitutional Conventions:

  • Educate senior secondary students about the Australian Constitution and how it guides democracy
  • Include opportunities for students to listen to speakers presenting perspectives on a constitutional issue and to participate in debates and plebiscites
  • Provide the basis for the election of Queensland's delegate team to attend the National Schools Constitutional Conventions (NSCC) held in Canberra each year.

JCU’s College of Business, Law and Governance supports the annual North Queensland Schools Constitutional Convention for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students, which is run in partnership with the Queensland Government's Department of Education and Training. The topics debated have included How to include Indigenous people in the Australian Constitution?; Raising Awareness of Constitutional Reform and Should the Australian House of Representatives have one allocated Indigenous seat from each State and Territory?
