The Mayo Lecture is an annual event run by the College of Business, Law and Governance in conjunction with the James Cook University Law Students Society (JCULSS) in honour of Mrs Marylyn Mayo, JCU's foundation law staff member. The JCULSS instituted the Mayo Lecture in 1991 as a tribute to Marylyn's work in maintaining a law presence at JCU and, ultimately, in establishing the full law degree here.
Recent Mayo Lectures have been delivered by:
- Dr Bryan Keon-Cohen, on the topic 'From Slavery to Sovereignty? Mabo, Native Title and the Uluru Statement from the Heart';
- Justice Lincoln Crowley - Queensland's inaugural First Nations Justice of the Supreme Court.
- The Honourable Justice Michael Kirby, on the topic 'Nuclear Proliferation and the Singapore Summit: A Challenge to International Law';
- Mr Anthony Morris QC, on the topic 'Human rights under siege on all sides: The combined onslaught of Terrorism, Political Correctness and the Dictatorship of Bureaucracy';
- Professor Rosalind Croucher AM, President of the Australian Law Reform Commission, on the topic 'The Common Law and the Protection of Rights, Freedoms and Privileges: Insights from the ALRC Freedoms Inquiry'.
