At the College of Business, Law and Governance (CBLG), we are committed to helping students succeed both during their studies and after graduation. Assurance of Learning (AoL) is our way of making sure our programs deliver high-quality education that prepares students for real-world challenges. It’s a continuous process of setting learning goals, measuring student achievement, and improving teaching and curriculum.
AoL ensures that students graduate with the skills and knowledge they need. We define clear learning outcomes for each program, assess how well students meet these outcomes, and use the results to enhance our courses. This helps us stay aligned with both our college and the University’s mission while meeting the expectations of students, employers, industry and accrediting bodies.
CBLG’s AoL is measured across six competencies:
1. Communication
Convey communication and ideas through clear and coherent communication skills.
2. Critical thinking
Apply critical thinking and problem-solving strategies in business contexts.
3. Ethical reasoning
Demonstrate judgement, and reflective practice with a commitment to ethical and sustainable practice.
4. Teamwork
Work collaboratively to meet team goals.
5. Global citizenship
Demonstrate awareness of global issues within cultural context.
6. Business knowledge
Apply broad and coherent business knowledge specific to discipline.
We use embedded assessments, internships, capstone subjects, and feedback from students and employers to evaluate learning outcomes. Programs such as peer assisted study sessions (PASS), mentoring, and career development initiatives support student achievement and provide valuable data for continuous improvement.
James Cook University has been Queensland’s top university for graduate employment for 13 consecutive years. In 2024, our postgraduate business programs were ranked #1 in Australia for employment outcomes. Our graduates consistently secure jobs in their chosen fields or continue with further study.
We are continually refining our programs based on feedback from students, alumni, and industry partners. AoL helps us stay accountable and focused on delivering relevant, high-quality education that meets the evolving needs of our learners and the workforce.
