Professor Tony Bacic is Director of the Bio21 Molecular Science and Biotechnology Institute and holder of a personal chair in the School of Botany at the University of Melbourne.

A Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, Professor Bacic was a student at James Cook University from 1971 to 1975 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1975 and a Bachelor of Science with Honours Class 1 in 1976.

From 1979 to 1981 he was a Research Associate at Michigan State University, USA, then a Visiting Scientist at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He has been at the University of Melbourne since 1987.

He is Director, Plant Cell Biology Research Centre, Deputy Director of the ARC Centre for Excellence in Plant Cell Walls, and is Platform Convenor of the NCRIS-funded Metabolomics Australia national centre.

Professor Bacic is also on the Editorial Boards of the journals Glycobiology, Plant Physiology, Planta and Plant & Cell Physiology, Frontiers in Plant Proteomics and Molecular & Cellular Proteomics, and  a Director of several small biotech companies.
