Professor Derek Smith is Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health at the University of Newcastle in NSW.  He previously served as Director of the WorkCover New South Wales Research Centre of Excellence and Deputy Director (Research) of the Central Coast Campus  both at the University of Newcastle's Ourimbah campus in NSW.

Professor Smith holds two Masters degrees from James Cook University - a Master of Public Health, which was conferred in 2004, and a Master of Science conferred in 2008.

Aside from JCU, he was educated at various universities in Australia and Asia, including Yamanashi Medical University in Japan and the National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan.

Before taking up his roles at the University of Newcastle, Professor Smith worked for the Japanese government at the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (JNIOSH) and the National Institute of Industrial Health.

Active in many different areas of research including occupational health, public health, epidemiology, bibliometrics and medical history, Professor Smith has published over 200 scientific articles and presented at numerous domestic and international conferences.
