2015 Early Career Recipient, College of Arts, Society and Education
Originally from Los Angeles, California, Dr Bradley Garrett is currently a human geography lecturer in the economy, governance and culture research group at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom.
After graduating from JCU in 2006, Dr Garrett worked for the United States federal government as an archaeologist and published his Masters research in the esteemed journal Archaeologies: Journal of the World Archaeological Congress.
In 2008, Dr Garrett began a PhD in the United Kingdom at Royal Holloway, University of London in cultural geography.
During his PhD, he published nine more articles and was invited to undertake two years of postdoctoral research at the University of Oxford from 2012 to 2014, where he retains a position as a Visiting Research Associate.
During his post-doctoral studies at the University of Oxford, he published his first book, Explore Everything: Place Hacking the City (Verso Books) which has sold over 10,000 copies and recently been translated into Japanese and Korean.
In the summer of 2014, Dr Garrett was invited to give a number of high-profile talks about his research, including the Festival of Dangerous Ideas at the Sydney Opera House, the Melbourne Writers Festival, The Brisbane Writers Festival, TEDx in Vienna and the Google Zeitgeist annual summit in Arizona in the United States, where he shared a session with former US president, Bill Clinton.
His work has been featured around the world, including a one-hour episode of Conversations with Richard Fidler on the ABC.
His second book, Subterranean London: Cracking the Capital was recently released by Prestel Publishing (Random House) worldwide and sold out in four months. It is being re-released in paperback in September.
He recently signed contracts for two more books to be released in Spring 2016 and has, at the age of 34, now published 20 articles and books, chapters, alongside a raft of other work for magazines, newspapers, television and radio.
Dr Bradley Garrett received a Master of Arts in Maritime Archaeology from James Cook University in 2006.
