Lecturer, JCU | QRC PVD Collaborator

From international PhD candidate to published researcher and academic improving diabetes outcomes in North Queensland.

Chanika Alahakoon

Driven by a lifelong passion for teaching and medical research, Dr Chanika Alahakoon’s journey from Sri Lanka to North Queensland is a powerful example of determination, resilience, and purpose.

After arriving in Australia to pursue a long-held ambition of completing a PhD in cardiovascular medicine, Dr Alahakoon joined QRC PVD, where she focused her research on diabetes-related foot disease — a critical and often under-recognised condition affecting communities in both Sri Lanka and Australia. Her work addressed the prevalence and severity of the disease, generating valuable insights with direct clinical relevance.

Throughout her PhD, Dr Alahakoon balanced significant personal and professional challenges, including motherhood, adapting to a new country, and navigating the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these pressures, she produced multiple first-author publications and was awarded a Cum Laude thesis.

Today, Dr Alahakoon is a Lecturer at James Cook University and an ongoing collaborator with QRC PVD. Her research continues to contribute to improved health outcomes for people living with diabetes, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Her story highlights the impact that dedicated researchers can have when supported by strong mentorship, meaningful research opportunities, and a collaborative research environment.
