Single Subject & Non-Award Study

Non‑award study refers to a type of enrolment where a student undertakes individual courses or subjects at a university without being awarded a formal degree, diploma, or certificate. It is a flexible option for those who wish to gain knowledge, enhance skills, or fulfil prerequisites without committing to a full program.

Common Purposes for Non‑Award Study

  • Professional development: Gain expertise in a specific area to advance your career.
  • Personal interest: Study a subject of interest without pursuing a qualification.
  • Pathway to a degree: Meet entry requirements for a degree program.
  • Professional registration requirements: For example the LPAB / Priestley 11 Legal Practitioners Admissions Board - Queensland Law Society
  • JCU Internal Students: Study a subject Online or On Campus to complete an approved study plan overload or complete a further attempt of a subject no longer available via the applicant’s home campus (with relevant approval.)
    • Subjects completed as part of a non‑award program may be credited towards relevant or cognate tertiary programs.

Before you apply

Identify the subjects you wish to study in the Course and Subjects Handbook. Check that you meet all applicable entry requirements and are eligible to apply for the subjects you have chosen.

You will also need to have your USI (Unique Student Identifier) ready. If you do not have a USI, you will need to create one before beginning your application.

  • For undergraduate subjects your course is Non-Award - Undergraduate - 97150
  • For postgraduate subjects your course is Non-Award - Postgraduate – 97250

(Applicants not currently enrolled at an Australian institution)

Cross‑institutional study is a type of non‑award study. The key difference is that the applicant is currently enrolled at another Australian institution.

Application Requirements

LPAB (Priestley 11) study is typically undertaken by applicants who hold an overseas law degree and are required to complete the recognised Priestley 11 subjects. These subjects are the “prescribed areas of knowledge” required to be eligible to apply for admission to the legal profession.

Applicants must have a letter from the relevant LPAB state board identifying the prescribed areas of knowledge yet to be satisfied. Applications are forwarded directly to the College of Business, Law and Governance (CBLG) for subject assessment. Once CBLG confirms the JCU equivalent subjects required, International Admissions can commence processing the application.
