1. Why did you choose to study at James Cook University (JCU)?

I have been living in Australia for more than two years, and I am currently in my first year of the Master of Social Work (Professional Qualifying) degree at JCU. Before I commenced my studies, I was on a working holiday visa and travelled and worked around different states in Australia. I wanted to study at JCU because of the reasonable tuition fees with a scholarship, and the high graduate employment rate.

2. What has been the highlight of your study experience at James Cook University so far?

I found the study mode is totally different from my country in China. In Australia, we have to learn how to study by ourselves, and self-reflection is very important. I also like the slow pace of life in Townsville. It is such a clean, beautiful coastal town. I like to spend my time walking down the river when I have free time. When I feel stressed and need self-care, I will go for a walk and listen to music.

Cara Tianyu Zhang. Cara enjoying the scenery on the East Coast of Australia.

3. What are your career goals?

When I finish my Master of Social Work degree, I plan to hopefully stay in Australia and find a full-time job in North Queensland. Compared to the fast pace of life in big cities, I like the slow pace of living here in Townsville, and I enjoy working and studying here.

4. What piece of advice would you like to share with any international students considering James Cook University?

Studying is hard, but you are not alone. JCU offers various resources and support services. I really recommend studying at JCU because you will never be disappointed.
