William Thomas Williams Honours Bursary

If all the below statements describe you and your current situation, you can apply for this scholarship:

• I am enrolled, or intend to enrol, in the Bachelor of Arts Honours year.

The value of the bursary will be $10,000 for full time and $5,000 for part time or such amount as the Fund administrator determines from time to time. Payment will be made in two equal instalments after Census date of Study Period 1 and Study Period 2. First payments will be made in the year following the awarding. Please allow up to 6 weeks after census date for payment.

Applications must be submitted through the official channel no later than close date for the year in which the award is to be made.

Applicants must submit, where appropriate:

• your curriculum vitae.
• your academic transcript.
• a written statement outlining your passion for your chosen field.

Applications submitted without the relevant documentation will not be considered.

Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation it has been received. After the closing date it will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee who will rank your application against others who have applied.

Introduction

In 1995 William Thomas Williams bequeathed to the University the whole of his estate. His estate included a property and a music collection. The proceeds from the sale of the property are held in a dedicated restricted fund. The funds are to be used for the education of persons in creative arts. This scholarship is subject to the provisions of James Cook University’s Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants Policy.

Value and Payment of the Bursary

Eligibility Criteria

The William Thomas Williams Honours Bursary shall be open to competition among candidates who:

• are enrolled, or intend to enrol, in the Bachelor of Arts Honours year.

Selection Criteria

The selection of the winner shall be made by the William Thomas Williams Awards Committee,

• Academic merit (50%)
• Commitment to chosen field (25%)
• Work/volunteer experience in chosen field (25%)

The Selection Committee reserves the right not to award a Bursary in any year if, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, there is no candidate of sufficient merit to warrant an award.

The Selection Committee will determine all matters relating to the selection of the Scholarship awardee.

Application Procedures

The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to make such enquiries as to the applicant’s good character and suitability to receive the scholarship, which includes authorisation for the Selection Committee to examine the applicant’s academic record, and seek opinions from relevant members of the academic staff of this University or any other academic institution.

Selection Process

The selection of the winner shall be made by the William Thomas Williams Awards Committee in accordance with the selection criteria.

Membership of the Selection Committee will comprise of at least three staff and will comprise:

• Head, Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS), or nominee;
  **OR a pool of appropriate JCU representatives.
  
  The Selection Committee reserves the right not to award a Bursary in any year if, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, there is no candidate of sufficient merit to warrant an award.

The Selection Committee will determine all matters relating to the selection of the Scholarship awardee.

Ongoing Eligibility

The awardee must remain enrolled in the course for which they were originally awarded.

Conditions of the Bursary

At the end of the academic year, a written report must be submitted to the scholarships office, the template will be sent to you.

If the recipient defers their study, they will no longer be eligible for the award. Where an award is terminated pursuant to the provisions to this clause it may be awarded to another suitable applicant.

The bursary may only be held while the recipient remains enrolled in their nominated area of study.  If the bursary holder transfers to another JCU degree, including another offering in a creative arts program, the bursary ceases to apply.

The bursary cannot be taken up at another institution.

A bursary normally terminates at the date specified in the original agreement. Honours bursaries will not be extended beyond two semesters. If the awardee transfers to another course offered by the University, the scholarship will be terminated.

If the bursary is suspended or terminated the Selection Committee shall determine whether any refund of the scholarship monies is payable and may determine that the bursary instalment of the semester in which the suspension or termination occurred be refunded by the scholar to the University in part of in full.

It is a requirement of accepting the bursary that the William Thomas Williams Scholars will be requested to participate in publicity of the bursary scheme. The awardee will be contacted for an interview and a photograph. The University may also publicise the Scheme by publishing the names of the bursary winner/s.

Successful applicants who are unable to take up the bursary may reapply in the following year.

If the holder of an award fails to comply with any of these provisions, the Selection Committee may terminate the award or withhold any further payments or take such action as it may deem necessary to enforce compliance with the provision or performance of the condition by the holder.

A student may lodge a request for review of decision in accordance with the provisions of the JCU Student Review and Appeals Policy.

The requirements of the Bursary shall not make the awarding of the Bursary conditional upon the recipient providing unremunerated services or products to the donor.

Administration of the Bursary

The bursary shall be administered by the Scholarships Office, on behalf of the Selection Committee.

The funds of the bursary shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the officer of the University charged with administering the scholarship.

Where there is a fund maintaining the award, the annual value of the award shall be approximately equal to the annual income from the fund.

Income from a fund not expended on the award which it maintains, shall be added to and become part of the fund.

Where an award provides some benefit to the recipient from a body external to the University, or an obligation upon a body external to the University, the University, its servants and agents, shall not be liable for that benefit or obligation.
