Bequest to JCU. The gift is intended to support scholarships for students at JCU Cairns and Townsville studying education or medicine who have completed their first year of studies and who are experiencing financial hardship.

    The Beryl Dorothea Dodge Scholarship is open for you to apply if you:

  • Are enrolled in your second year (completed 24 credit points) in one of the degrees listed below:
    • Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery
    • Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education)
    • Bachelor of Education (Primary)
    • Bachelor of Education (Secondary)
  • Are enrolled at the Cairns, Nguma-bada campus or the Townsville, Bebegu Yumba campus.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 4.0.
  • Are experiencing financial hardship and need financial assistance to attend university.

The value of the scholarship is $4,000. Payments will be made in one lump sum after awarding of the scholarship.

Applications must be submitted on the official application form no later than the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made.

Applicants must submit with the official form, where appropriate:

  • A copy of your JCU Academic transcript.
  • Written Statement of no more than 500 words outlining:
    • What degree you are studying and why,
    • Why did you choose to study at JCU, and
    • Your financial hardship.
  • Financial hardship documentation, documented evidence of financial hardship based on your answers in the application questions.

Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation it has been received. After the closing date it will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee who will rank your application against others who have applied.

Selection Criteria

The Selection Committee shall, in the exercise of its absolute discretion, afford consideration to the following criteria:

  • Financial hardship (80%).
  • Academic merit (20%)

Application Procedures

The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to make such enquires as to the applicant's good character and suitability to receive the scholarship, which includes authorization for the Selection Committee to examine the applicant's academic record and seek opinions from relevant members of the academic staff of this University or any other academic institution.

Selection Process

The award of the scholarship shall be made in the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee, which shall comprise:

  • Scholarship Office to award based on key criteria.

The Selection Committee will determine all matters relating to the selection of the Scholarship awardee.

Conditions of the Scholarship

The scholarship is awarded for 1 year only. Students are required to re-apply annually.

A student may lodge a request for review of decision in accordance with the provisions of the Student Complaints Policy and Procedures.

Administration of the Scholarship

The scholarship shall be administered by Scholarships Office of the University, on behalf of the Selection Committee.

The funds of the scholarship shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the scholarship office.

Where an award provides some benefit to the recipient from a body external to the University, or an obligation upon a body external to the University, the University, its servants, and agents, shall not be liable for that benefit or obligation.
