Lucy Le's Wish Oncology Conference Grant

• Australian Citizen, New Zealand Citizen, Permanent Resident or International Student.
• Enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at James Cook University (including higher degree by research).
• Enrolled full time or part time at either Cairns or Townsville campus.
• Applicants must have a link to oncology in their undergraduate degree or research project.
• Are prepared to supply a student report after conference attendance for donor.

If you are a successful applicant of this grant you will receive $2,000 paid  into your IRA/Student Research account upon receipt of confirmation of your conference attendance.  If you do not have a IRA/Student Research account one will be established for you.

Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation it has been received. After the closing date it will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee who will rank your application against others who have applied.

Introduction

Le Koeniger, baptised under the name “Lucy”, was born in Malaysia and upon graduating devoted her time to teaching, and helping students in her community, to nurture the next generation. Whilst travelling abroad she met her husband, Ray Koeniger, and later moved to Australia; her home for over 60 years. Lucy Le inspired friends and family with her selflessness. She was a quiet but firm supporter of those in need, and would never place herself first, even after being diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer, instead opting to support researchers in their search for a cure. Her wish was to help create a world where no one would have to lose a loved one to cancer through improving early detection and treatment methods. It is for this wish that the Oncology Conference Grant has been set up to provide access to education opportunities for future medical professionals. It is our hope that through this grant that Lucy Le’s passion for education and selflessness will inspire future generations to make her wish a reality.

This scholarship is subject to the provisions of James Cook University’s Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants Policy.

Value and payment of the grant

The value of the scholarship shall be $2,000 paid into your IRA/Student Research account upon receipt of confirmation of your conference attendance.  If you do not have a IRA/Student Research account one will be established for you.

Please allow up to 6 weeks after census date for payment.

Eligibility Criteria

The Lucy Le's Wish Oncology Conference Grant is open for you to apply if you:

• Australian Citizen, New Zealand Citizen, Permanent Resident or International Student
• Enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at James Cook University (including higher degree by research).
• Enrolled full time or part time at either Cairns or Townsville campus.
• Applicants must have a link to oncology in their undergraduate degree or research project.
• Are prepared to supply a student report after conference attendance for donor.

Selection Criteria

The Selection Criteria are:

1. Academic merit / research record (40%)
2. Planned use of funds which is rigorous, achievable, and/or compatible with scholarship purpose (30%)
3. The contribution the proposed activity to students learning or research (20%)
4. Level of participation candidate will have in the conference (10%)

Application Procedures

Applications must be submitted on the official application form no later than the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made.

Applicants must submit with the official form, where appropriate:

• Proof of conference registration.
• A copy of your academic record.
• Proposed budget for conference attendance, including reasonable travel expenses, incidentals and conference fees, each expense should be itemised separately.
• A written statement outlining:
  1. Your links to oncology
  2. How this area of medical research is important to you; and
  3. Discussion around the level of participation applicant will have in the conference (eg. Planned agenda/sessions to attend, any speaking engagements, presentations, workshops, networking opportunities, etc).
• If applicable, list and links to any publications you have been an author on.
• If applicable, a copy of your abstract/presentation submitted to conference if you are doing more than just attending.

Applications submitted without the relevant documentation will not be considered.

The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to make such enquiries as to the applicant’s good character and suitability to receive the grant, which includes authorisation for the Selection Committee to examine the applicant’s academic record and seek opinions from relevant members of the academic staff of this University or any other academic institution.

Selection Process

The award of the grant will be made in the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee, which shall comprise:

• A pool of appropriate JCU representatives

The Selection committee will be responsible for shortlisting and/or interviewing of candidates.

The Selection Committee will determine all matters relating to the selection of the Grant awardee.

Ongoing Eligibility

• The recipient must remain enrolled.

Reporting Requirements

Successful recipients will need to provide proof of their conference registration before the grant will be paid and the student will be required to supply a student report after conference attendance for the Donor.

Conditions of the Grant

• If the recipient defers their study, the recipient will no longer be eligible for the award, however, student can reapply upon returning to studies.
• If the holder of an award takes an official leave of absence, the award will be terminated, however, student can reapply upon returning to studies.
• If the holder of the award does not meet the continuing eligibility as specified in section 6, the award will not be awarded.

A student may lodge a request for review of decision in accordance with the provisions of the Student Complaints Policy and Procedures.

Administration of the Grant

The grant shall be administered by the scholarship's office, on behalf of the Selection Committee.

The funds of the grant shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the officer of the University charged with administering the scholarship.

Where an award provides some benefit to the recipient from a body external to the University, or an obligation upon a body external to the University, the University, its servants and agents, shall not be liable for that benefit or obligation
