Elizabeth Pearse Music HDR Top Up Scholarship

If all the below statements describe you and your current situation, you can apply for this scholarship:

• I am an Australian citizen, New Zealand citizen or holder of a permanent visa; and
• I am or intend to enrol full time in PhD, or Master of Philosophy that incorporates music in the methodology.

If you are a successful applicant of this scholarship, you will receive $10,000 paid in two equal instalments after Confirmation of Candidature. $5,000 in year 1 and $5,000 in year 2 of the scholarship paid in lump sum/s you’re your personal bank account for use on living expenses.

You will also receive a $10,000 seed funding grant paid to your student research account to assist with research and application for other grants. Paid in a lump sum after Confirmation of Candidature.

Applications must be submitted on the official application form no later than the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made.

Applicants must submit with the official form, where appropriate:

• A copy of your academic transcript;
• Abstract of research project, including summary of how your project relates to Music;
• A copy of your curriculum vitae; and
• Email or letter from supervisor confirming their support of the scholarship application and the project includes Music.

The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to make such enquiries as to the applicant’s good character and suitability to receive the scholarship, which includes authorisation for the Selection Committee to examine the applicant’s academic record, and seek opinions from relevant members of the academic staff of this University or any other academic institution.

Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation it has been received. Your application will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee who will rank your application against others who have applied. Applicants may be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process.

Introduction

This scholarship was established in 2018 in memory of the late Mrs Elizabeth Pearse to fund the study of music at Masters or PhD level

This scholarship is subject to the provisions of James Cook University’s Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants Policy..

Value of the Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria

The Elizabeth Pearse Music Scholarship will be open to competition among applicants who:

• Are domestic students, i.e. Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens and holders of a permanent visa; and
• Are or intend to enrol full time in PhD, or Master of Philosophy that incorporates music in the methodology.

Selection Criteria

The Selection Criteria are:

• Relatedness of project to the field of music (50%);
• Academic merit / research record (30%);
• Whether the candidate has, or will receive, any other financial assistance during their studies (20%).

Application Procedures

Applications must be submitted on the official application form no later than the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made.

Selection Process

The award of the scholarship shall be made in the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee, which shall comprise:

• Advancement nominee (chair),
• Associate Dean of Research Education from relevant College applicants are enrolled; and
• Associate Dean of Research from relevant College applicants are enrolled.

NOTE: Supervisors of applicants cannot be on the selection panel, if position of ADRE or ADR is an applicants’ primary or secondary supervisor, an alternative nominee will need to be provided by Chair.

Ongoing Eligibility

• The recipient must maintain satisfactory progress reports.
• The College of Arts, Society & Education will review and confirm all matters regarding ongoing eligibility; and
• Where the recipient fails to meet this requirement evidence of special circumstances contributing to the performance must be provided to the Selection Committee for consideration of ongoing eligibility.
• The recipient of the scholarship shall continue to receive the award on condition that in the opinion of the Selection Committee, and on advice from the head of the school in which the recipient is undertaking a course of study, that the recipient maintains a satisfactory level of performance.  Where it is determined that the level of academic performance is unsatisfactory the Selection Committee may in its absolute discretion cancel the award or suspend the award for such time as it may determine and/or until academic performance is considered satisfactory.  Where an award is cancelled pursuant to the provisions to this clause it may, for the remainder of the term for which the original holder would have been entitled to it, be awarded to another suitable candidate.

Conditions of the Scholarship

• The recipient must contact the Scholarship Office (scholarships@jcu.edu.au) with evidence of Confirmation of Candidature to commence scholarship payments and receive seed funding.
• Scholarship will be held for 12 months from awarding to allow recipient to reach Confirmation of Candidature milestone, if they have not already. After 12 months, extension of holding the scholarship will need to be reviewed by the Selection Committee.
• If student has completed the Confirmation of Candidature milestone, they can receive their first payment and seed funding.
• The recipient must maintain satisfactory progress reports to receive year 2 scholarship payment.
• At the end of the academic year, a written report must be submitted to the scholarships office, the template will be sent to you.
• In the event that the recipient suspends their study at James Cook University, the scholarship shall be suspended.

Administration of the Scholarship

• The scholarship shall be administered by the Scholarships Office, on behalf of the Selection Committee.
• The funds of the scholarship shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the officer of the University charged with administering the scholarship.
• Where there is a fund maintaining the award, the annual value of the award shall be approximately equal to the annual income from the fund.
• Where an award provides some benefit to the recipient from a body external to the University, or an obligation upon a body external to the University, the University, its servants and agents, shall not be liable for that benefit or obligation.
