The JCU Bridging Excellence Scholarship and The JCU Pathways Prizes have been established to provide an additional incentive and a pathway for students to encourage them to continue their education at JCU.
This scholarship is subject to the provisions of James Cook University’s Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants Policy.

This scholarship program is open for you to apply if you are:
- An Australian Citizen or Australian Permanent Humanitarian Visa Holder, or Australian Permanent Resident or New Zealand Citizen
- A current student undertaking a Diploma of Nursing at either TAFE QLD in Townsville or Cairns, or Mater Education in Townsville, due to complete in the year of their application.
- Have applied or will apply directly to JCU's Bachelor of Nursing Science degree.
Successful recipients are likely to exhibit all or some of the following:
- Consistent achievement and progress in their studies.
- A commitment to Nursing, especially in Regional Australia.
- Resilience and perseverance in their studies or extracurricular accomplishments.
If you are a successful applicant of the scholarship studying full time, you will receive $5,000 per year for 2 years.
If you are a successful applicant of the scholarship studying part time, you will receive $10,000 pro-rated over the duration of your study.
If you are a successful applicant of the prize, you will receive $500 paid in 1 lump sum.
The scholarship shall be paid in 2 equal instalments after census date of Study Period 1 and Study Period 2 for Semesters or 3 equal instalments (rounded to the nearest dollar) after census date of TRI 1, TRI 2, and TRI 3 for Trimesters. Please allow up to 4 weeks after census date for payment.
Applications must be submitted on the official application form no later than the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made.
Only one application is required for the scholarship and prize.
Applicants must submit with the official form, where appropriate:
- A copy of your Diploma.
- A written statement of no more than 500 words outlining:
- your academic performance and achievements during the Diploma of Nursing.
- your motivation to pursue a career in nursing, particularly in regional or rural Australia
- any personal, academic, or extracurricular challenges you’ve overcome, that will support your application
- Any other supporting documentation that would assist the Selection Committee in developing an opinion as to the merit of the application. (e.g., reference letter, award certificate, resume)
Applications submitted without the relevant documentation will not be considered.
The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to make such enquires as to the applicant's good character and suitability to receive the scholarship, which includes authorisation for the Selection Committee to examine the applicant's academic record and seek opinions from relevant members of the academic staff of this University or any other academic institution.
Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation it has been received. After the closing date it will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee who will rank your application against others who have applied.

The Selection Committee shall, in the exercise of its absolute discretion, afford consideration to the following criteria:

Application Procedures
Applications must be submitted on the official application form no later than the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made.
Only one application is required for the scholarship and prize.
Applicants must submit with the official form, where appropriate:
- A copy of your Diploma.
- A written statement of no more than 500 words outlining:
- your academic performance and achievements during the Diploma of Nursing.
- your motivation to pursue a career in nursing, particularly in regional or rural Australia
- any personal, academic, or extracurricular challenges you’ve overcome, that will support your application
- Any other supporting documentation that would assist the Selection Committee in developing an opinion as to the merit of the application. (e.g., reference letter, award certificate, resume)
- 1 x Future Student representative
- 1 x College of Healthcare Sciences representative
- 1 x third-party representative (TAFE or Mater Ed representative)
- The recipient must maintain a minimum GPA of 4.5
- The recipient must remain enrolled in Bachelor of Nursing Science (Pre-registration)
- Any changes to the recipient's enrolment will need approval from the selection committee to continue to receive the scholarship or hold scholarship funds.
- The recipient is required to provide a student impact report at the end of the calendar year.
- A student may lodge a request for review of a decision in accordance with the provisions of the Student Complaints Policy and Procedures.

The award of the scholarship and prize shall be made in the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee, which shall comprise:

Not to award a Scholarship in any year if, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, there is no candidate of sufficient merit to warrant an award.
The Selection Committee may require applicants to undertake an interview as part of their application.
The Selection Committee will determine all matters relating to the selection of the Scholarship awardee.

Conditions of the Scholarship
Administration of the Scholarship
The scholarship shall be administered by the Scholarships Office of the University, on behalf of the Selection Committee.
The funds of the scholarship shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the scholarship office.
Where an award provides some benefit to the recipient from a body external to the University, or an obligation upon a body external to the University, the University, its servants, and agents, shall not be liable for that benefit or obligation.
