Leo and Mabel Barnett Travel Grant

The Leo and Mabel Barnett Travel Grant was established in 1991 through the generosity of Mrs Mabel Barnett. Today, it helps students take their studies overseas, providing support for approved international experiences at one of our exchange partner universities.

This grant is subject to the provisions of James Cook University’s Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants Policy.

If all the below statements describe you and your current situation, you can apply for this award:

  • I am an Australian citizen;
  • I have applied to go on an international exchange.

Individual grants will be valued between $1,000 - $5,000 per student with final value determined by the Selection Committee. The Committee will have a total of $10,000 to award annually.

Grants will be paid in one lump sum, once the student and the Global Experience Advisor has confirmed that they student meets the following JCU exchange requirements:

  • Have, or will have, completed 24 credit points (by the time of departure)
  • Have a GPA of 4.5 or above;
  • Have approval from their College to go on exchange

Prior to completing an application, you should carefully read the Scholarship Rules below. Applicants wanting to apply for this scholarship must attach the following documents:

  • Academic transcript
  • Resume or CV (max. 2 pages) - Including extracurricular activities, work experience, and achievements
  • Personal statement (approx. 300–500 words) addressing:
    • Why you want to participate in exchange
    • How the experience aligns with your academic and career goals
    • What you hope to gain from the experience
    • How this grant would support your participation, including any financial barriers you may face. NOTE: Additional consideration may be given to students who demonstrate that financial support will enable participation.
    • Outline any personal, financial, educational or geographic circumstances that may have impacted your access to higher education or international opportunities (for example, being the first in your family to attend university, coming from a low socio-economic background, or from a regional, rural or remote area). NOTE: Additional consideration may be given to applicants from underrepresented backgrounds to enable participation.

Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation it has been received. After the closing date it will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee who will rank your application against others who have applied. Applicants may be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process.

Selection Criteria

The Selection Committee will, in the exercise of their absolute discretion, afford consideration to the following criteria:

  • academic merit or potential;
  • the character of the candidate for the award; and
  • any other criteria that the Selection Committee deems appropriate, including whether the candidate has, or will receive any other scholarship, bursary or grant assistance during their studies.

Application Procedures

Applications will be considered in two stages:

  1. Priority assessment of applicants undertaking exchange at French-speaking host institutions. Students undertaking exchange in French-speaking countries/institutions will be given priority for these awards to align with the original intention of the donor to support French language studies. French speaking countries may include, but are not limited to: France, Belgium, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, parts of Canada inc Quebec, parts of Switzerland inc Geneva and Lausanne.
  2. If places remain, all other eligible applications will be assessed as follows using the academic record, personal statement and exchange application as sources of evidence:
  • Academic merit (25%)
  • Contribution and engagement - Evidence of involvement in university, community, or extracurricular activities (20%)
  • Financial need (25%)
  • Equity and access (30%)

Applications submitted without the relevant documentation will not be considered.

The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to make such enquiries as to the applicant’s good character and suitability to receive the grant, which includes authorisation for the Selection Committee to examine the applicant’s academic record, and seek opinions from relevant members of the academic staff of this University or any other academic institution.

Selection Process

The award of the bursary shall be made in the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee, which shall comprise:

  • Senior Global Experience Advisor and other representatives nominated by the Senior Global Experience Advisor, as required.

The Selection Committee will determine all matters relating to the Bursary.

Conditions of the Grant

Students who do not satisfy the JCU exchange requirements, after being awarded a grant, will not be paid and their funds may be re-allocated.

Students who fail to undertake their exchange program after funds have been paid may be required to return their grant money.

Administration of the Grant

The Grant shall be administered by Scholarships Office of the University, on behalf of the Selection Committee.

The funds of the grant shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the Scholarship Office.

Where an award provides some benefit to the recipient from a body external to the University, or an obligation upon a body external to the University, the University, its servants, and agents, shall not be liable for that benefit or obligation.
