Eric Booth Memorial Grants in Chemistry

Established by the JCU Council in June 1985 by a bequest from the estate of the late Mr Eric Booth, a Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute. The grants are maintained by the income derived from the bequest.

If all the below statements describe you and your current situation, you can apply for this scholarship:

  • I am undertaking second year, third year, honours or postgraduate study in chemistry; and
  • One member of my supervisory panel is in from the discipline of Chemistry at JCU: and
  • I am attending a conference / professional development activity related to my studies or I am undertaking a chemistry research project.

The value of the travelling and research grant will be determined by the Selection Committee. The grant will provide assistance to:

  • travelling grants to attend conference / professional development activities approved by the Selection Committee; or
  • grants to assist honours and post-graduate students for their research at JCU.
  • Funding will be paid in one lump sum payment into a Student Research account (IRA) at JCU, it will not be paid into a student's personal account. If a student does not currently hold an IRA, the Student Finance & Scholarship Team will request one be established upon awarding.

Applicants must submit the following:

  • JCU Academic transcript;
  • Summary of applicants supervisory team (Name, Department at JCU):
  • Resume including qualifications, work experience, research outputs / publications:
  • Written statement of no more than 500 words outlining:
  1. Amount requested, and planned use of the funds which is rigorous, achievable and compatible with time left in course/candidature (the maximum amount in one request can be $5,000);
  2. Outline of any other funding or financial support you have requested and received throughout your degree/research:
  3. If a previous recipient of this grant, provide previously awarded value and year.

Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation it has been received. It will then be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee who will rank your application against others who have applied. Applicants may be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process.

Nature of the Grant

Successful applicants can apply for up to $8,000 in grant funds to offset the costs of travel for conference / professional development activities or to offset research project costs.
Funding will be paid in one lump sum payment into a Student Research account (IRA) at JCU, it will not be paid into a student's personal account. If a student does not currently hold an IRA, the Student Finance & Scholarship Team will request one be established upon awarding.

Selection Criteria

The Selection Committee shall, in the exercise of its absolute discretion, afford consideration to the following criteria:

  • Academic merit / research record (30%);
  • Planned use of funds which is rigorous, achievable, innovative, and/or compatible with time left in degree/candidature (40%);
  • The contribution the proposed activity has to either the advancement in knowledge and understanding of the individual or to the field of chemistry as a whole (20%);
  • Whether the candidate has received the Eric Booth Memorial Grant, or any other financial grant assistance during their studies (10%).

Application Procedures

Applications must be submitted on the official form no later than the date set by the Selection Committee for the year in which the award is to be made.

Applicants must submit the following:

  • Academic transcript;
  • Resume including qualifications, work experience, extra-curricular activities, research outputs / publications;
  • Written statement of no more than 500 words outlining:
  1. Your background and motivations for studying your chosen course;
  2. How your degree relates to the field of chemistry;
  3. Amount requested, and planned use of the funds which is rigorous, achievable and compatible with time left in course/candidature.
  4. Outline of any other funding or financial support you have received throughout your degree/research.

The Selection Committee may require applicants to undertake an interview as part of their application.

Selection Process

The award of the grant will be made in the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee, which shall comprise:

  • Dean, College of Science and Engineering or nominee (Chair)
  • Head Chemistry or nominee,
  • **OR a pool of appropriate JCU representatives

The Selection committee will be responsible for shortlisting and/or interviewing of candidates.

The Selection Committee will determine all matters relating to the selection of the grant awardee.

Ongoing Eligibility

Recipients are eligible to reapply for the grant annually. However, applicants are not to receive more than $8,000 in total for postgraduate recipients and $4,000 in total for undergraduate recipients.
If students complete an undergraduate degree at JCU and move into postgraduate studies at JCU, they are eligible for a total of $8,000 across the two degrees.

Conditions of the Grant

As a recipient of the Eric Booth Memorial Grant you are required to submit a student report once a year until funds are utilised:
* Summary of your project / conference attendance / professional development.
* Impact scholarship funds had on you as an individual and your project
* Research outcomes from project.
Your feedback is highly valued and keeps our scholarship donors informed about the impact of their gifts. It also helps us improve our scholarship programs.
JCU is required to share an annual report with Royal Australian Chemical Institute (North Queensland Section).
In the event the Selection Committee cancels or suspends the student’s grant, a student may lodge a request for review of decision in accordance with the provisions of the Student Complaint Management Policy and Procedures.
The requirements of the grant shall not make the awarding of the grant conditional upon the recipient providing unremunerated services or products to the donor.

A student may lodge a request for review of decision in accordance with the provisions of the Student Appeals Policy.

Administration of the Grant

The grant shall be administered by the scholarship's office, on behalf of the Selection Committee.

The funds of the scholarship shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the officer of the University charged with administering the grant.
