JCU Library - SAGE Publishing Asia Pacific Grant for Indigenous HDR Students

The JCU Library - SAGE Publishing Asia Pacific Grant for Indigenous HDR Students will be open to competition among candidates who:

• Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander; and
• Are enrolled in a JCU Higher Degree Research program; and
• Are enrolled at a JCU Australian Tropical Campus (Townsville, Cairns or Online).

The value of the grant is a $5,000 once off payment, to support student’s research activities.

Applications must be submitted on the official online application form and be received no later than the advertised close date.
Applicants must submit with the official form, where appropriate:

• A written statement which addresses;
  1. A brief description of research (max 200 words) including why the project is important and necessary, what impact the project will have on target demographics;
  2. How the funds would be used and how this would help progress their research; and
  3. If you are ready to publish your research, a brief proposal on the article content, which SAGE Journal title you would target for publication.
• A reference from your research supervisor attesting to the character of the candidate.

Applications submitted without the relevant documentation will not be considered.

The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to make such enquiries as to the applicant’s good character and suitability to receive the grant, which includes authorisation for the Selection Committee to examine the applicant’s academic record, and seek opinions from relevant members of the academic staff of this University or any other academic institution.

Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation it has been received. After the closing date it will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee who will rank your application against others who have applied. Applicants may be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process.

To this end SAGE Publishing Asia-Pacific are providing funding for a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) grant to Australian Indigenous HDR students at James Cook University.

This scholarship is subject to the provisions of James Cook University’s Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants Policy.

Value and payment of the grant

Eligibility Criteria

• Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander; and
• Are enrolled in a JCU Higher Degree Research program; and
• Are enrolled at a JCU Australian Tropical Campus (Townsville, Cairns or Online).

Selection Criteria

The Selection Criteria are:

• the character of the candidate for the award; and
• the quality of the written statement; and
• any other criteria that the Selection Committee deems appropriate, including whether the candidate has, or will receive any other scholarship assistance during their studies.

Selection Process

The award of the grant will be made in the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee, which shall comprise:

• Director, Library Services and University Librarian (Chair), or nominee;
• Manager, Scholarly Communications, Library Services, or nominee; and
• Deputy Vice Chancellor, Indigenous Education and Strategy, or nominee.

The Selection Committee may require applicants to undertake an interview as part of their application.

The Selection Committee will determine all matters relating to the selection of the Grant awardee.

Conditions of the Grant

• The successful candidate will be required to present their research proposal to the research community soon after they are announced as successful applicant. The JCU Library Manger, Scholarly Communications will coordinate this opportunity with the recipient.
• The recipient is expected to submit an article to a SAGE publication during their JCU HDR course.
• If the recipient defers their study, the recipient will no longer be eligible for the award and all unspent monies should be returned to Scholarships Office for redistribution.
• If the holder of the award takes an official leave of absence the award will be terminated and all unspent monies should be returned to Scholarships Office for redistribution.
• A student may lodge a request for review of decision in accordance with the provisions of the Student Appeals Policy.

Administration of the Grant

The grant shall be administered by the scholarships office, on behalf of the Selection Committee.

The funds of the grant shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by Scholarships Office.

Where there is a fund maintaining the award, the annual value of the award shall be approximately equal to the annual income from the fund. (Only required if restricted fund set up)

Where an award provides some benefit to the recipient from a body external to the University, or an obligation upon a body external to the University, the University, its servants and agents, shall not be liable for that benefit or obligation.
