Maggie Grant-Wronski Memorial Grant

The Grant was established in 2015 by the family, friends and colleagues of Maggie Grant-Wronski and by the James Cook University Medical Students’ Association (JCUMSA). The Grant will assist a 3rd year student to undertake an approved elective placement in a rural / remote Indigenous community. This Grant is subject to the provisions of James Cook University’s Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants Policy.

If all the below statements describe you and your current situation, you can apply for this scholarship:

  • I am enrolled in Year 3 of the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in the year that the applications are due; and
  • undertaking an approved elective placement in a rural / remote Indigenous community.

If you are a successful applicant of this grant you will receive $4,000 paid in one instalment, upon awarding.

Prior to submitting an application, you should carefully read the Scholarship Rules below.

Applicants wanting to apply for this scholarship must upload the following documents with their submission:

  • A copy of your JCU academic record.
  • A copy of your Curriculum Vitae.
  • A written statement of no more than 600 words addressing:
    • Confirmation of your ability to undertake this placement in Year 3 – where, when, how long, etc.
    • Your interest / suitability to undertake an approved elective placement in a rural / remote community with a substantial Indigenous population;
    • Benefits of such a placement to you and for your career;
    • Potential of the placement to provide opportunities to share knowledge, experience and connections with the College of Medicine and Dentistry and JCU.

When applying for a scholarship it is very important that you answer all the questions and include all relevant documents.  Your application and relevant documents must be submitted before the closing date. If an application is incomplete, it will not be considered.

Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation it has been received. It will then be sent with all other applications to the selection committee for reviewing and awarding.

Nature of the Grant

The value of the grant shall be $4,000 paid in one instalment, upon awarding.

Eligibility Criteria

The Grant shall be open to competition among applicants who:

  • I am enrolled in Year 3 of the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in the year that the applications are due; and
  • undertaking an approved elective placement in a rural / remote Indigenous community.

Selection Criteria

The Selection Criteria are:

  • Academic Merit (10%)
  • Personal Attributes (10%)
  • Written statement (80%):
    • The student’s interest / suitability to undertake an approved elective placement in a rural / remote community with a substantial Indigenous population.
    • Benefits of such a placement for the student and their career.
    • Potential of the placement to provide opportunities to share knowledge, experience and connections with the College of Medicine and Dentistry and JCU.

Application Procedures

Applicants must submit with the official form:

  • A copy of your JCU academic record.
  • A copy of your Curriculum Vitae.

Applications submitted without the relevant documentation will not be considered.

Selection Process

The Selection Committee, which shall comprise:

  • Head of the MBBS program (Chair) or nominee
  • College of Medicine and Dentistry (CMD) Indigenous Academic staff member or nominee
  • Other members deemed appropriate, as determined by the Chair

Conditions of the Grant

At the end of the academic year, a written report must be submitted to the Scholarships Office, the template will be sent to you.

If the holder of an award fails to comply with any of these provisions or any provision relating to a particular award or with any conditions imposed under these provisions or the provisions relating to a particular award, the Council may terminate the award or withhold any further enrolments or take such action as it may deem necessary to enforce compliance with the provision or performance of the condition by the holder.

A student may lodge a request for review of decision in accordance with the provisions of the Student Appeals Policy.

Administration of the Grant

The grant shall be administered by the Scholarships Office on behalf of the Selection Committee.

The funds of the grant shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the officer of the University charged with administering the grant.

Where there is a fund maintaining the award, the annual value of the award shall be approximately equal to the annual income from the fund.

Income from a fund not expended on the award which it maintains, shall be added to and become part of the fund.
