Field Education
Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work (Professional Qualifying) students have two exciting 500-hour opportunities during their studies to integrate theoretical learning with experience in the field.

Study via the RATEP pathway
The Bachelor of Education (Primary) is also part of the Remote Area Teacher Education Program (RATEP) pathway to teacher education. RATEP's aim is to increase the number of registered Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teachers in Queensland by offering courses in communities where students live, through a partnership between JCU, TAFE Queensland and the Queensland Department of Education. RATEP centres are based in numerous school communities, where teacher coordinators will support you in your study.
Teaching course requirement
All students enrolled in an Initial Teacher Education course must achieve the required standard for both the Literacy and Numeracy Tests for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE).
Pre-service teachers: Work-integrated learning
Professional Experience is a major feature in James Cook University's initial teacher education program. Bachelor of Education students have at least one Professional Experience placement in each year of the program while Master of Teaching and Learning students have at least three placement opportunities to prepare them for the teaching profession.
Pre-service counsellors: Work-integrated learning
Within the Practicum in Guidance and Counselling subject of the Master of Guidance and Counselling degree, students undertake field-based placements (1000 hours in total). These placements assist the pre-service counsellor to develop the skills necessary for quality ethical practice.
