My name is Teresa Yu, and I’m an international student from Taiwan. I’m currently in my second year of a Bachelor of Commerce, double majoring in Accounting and Economics at James Cook University (JCU). My journey has been one of unexpected turns, personal growth, and finding the courage to embrace change.
When I arrived in Townsville in 2020, it was my first time in Australia and my first experience living in a foreign country. Initially, I came to study medicine, following a path I thought was meant for me. But within a month, COVID-19 struck. Suddenly, the world went into lockdown, and everything shifted online. In the quiet moments of this upheaval, I found myself reflecting deeply on my goals. That’s when I realised medicine might not be the path that would truly fulfil me.
With a mix of uncertainty and determination, I decided to make a bold change and switched to studying commerce, a field I had no prior experience in. Business wasn’t part of the curriculum at my high school, so venturing into this area felt like diving into the unknown. It was both intimidating and exciting, but looking back now, I know it was the best decision I’ve ever made. Now, as a PASS Leader for multiple subjects, I’ve discovered the joy of helping others succeed. I also work part-time at JCU in a couple of roles that have enriched my university experience. Most importantly, I’ve found a sense of happiness and purpose that I hadn’t anticipated when I first arrived in Australia.
Teresa is recognised for her outstanding contributions as a student ambassador.
The warmth of the Townsville community has been one of the most unexpected joys of my journey. Whether it’s chatting with fellow students on campus or exchanging smiles with strangers during my evening walks along the river, these small moments of connection have made this place feel like home.
My experience has taught me a lesson I’ll carry for life: it’s okay to change direction. The path we start on isn’t always the one we’re meant to follow. Being open to new opportunities, stepping out of my comfort zone, and redefining my goals has been the most transformative part of my journey as an international student. To any international student feeling uncertain or hesitant to make a change, my advice is this: trust yourself, be brave, and embrace the unexpected. Often, the most meaningful adventures begin where your comfort zone ends.
As I continue my studies in commerce, I’m excited about what lies ahead and deeply grateful for the journey that brought me here.
