Supratic Chakma (Bangladesh)

I’m Supratic Chakma, an international student from Bangladesh and a proud recipient of the prestigious Australia Award Scholarship. At James Cook University (JCU), I’m pursuing a Master of International Tourism and Hospitality Management (MITHM) and making the most of the vibrant, multicultural Cairns community.

Studying in Australia has always been a dream of mine and making that dream a reality was a challenging journey that I overcame through hard work and perseverance. And when I finally had the chance to choose an Australian University, I knew I had to pick the best option through significant research into all aspects of studying in Australia.

JCU stood out to me for its innovative curriculum and breathtaking location. The subjects offered as part of the MITHM course blend management, business, tourism, and hospitality, aligning perfectly with my interests. The expertise of the lecturers, whose contributions to tourism academia significantly enhance the value of my education, further solidified my decision. Additionally, JCU’s Cairns campus, where the Great Barrier Reef meets ancient rainforests, offers an exceptional environment for studying tourism and hospitality, enriched by the local Indigenous cultures.

Reflecting on my time at JCU, I realise that while I love studying here, it isn’t just memorable because of the academics - it has been the incredible experiences outside of my studies that have made the journey unforgettable. The stunning landscapes and tropical weather provide the perfect backdrop for outdoor activities, and as a running enthusiast, I’ve taken full advantage of the beautiful Esplanade. One of my proudest moments was completing a half marathon at the 2024 Cairns Running Festival, which stands out as a true highlight of my time here.

Beyond my love for running, immersing myself in Cairns’ cultural diversity and vibrant events has made my lifestyle here incredibly fulfilling. This year, I joined the Cairns Student Hub as a Study Cairns international student ambassador. Volunteering at the student hub has allowed me to build a network of connections in North Queensland and engage deeply with the community. My role as a student ambassador enables me to share my passion for Cairns and promote it as an ideal destination for international students.

Back in Bangladesh, I serve as a trainer at the National Hotel and Tourism Training Institute of Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation under the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism. After completing my studies at JCU, I look forward to returning home and applying the knowledge and skills I’ve gained. I will always look back on my time at JCU with fond memories of the world-class education and extraordinary experiences I had here.
