Australian Orthopaedic Association Joint University Scholarship

If all the below statements describe you and your current situation, you can apply for this scholarship:

• I am an Australian citizen, New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent visa holder;
• I am currently enrolled in Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery year 5 and will be enrolled in year 6 in the following year;
• I have been approved to undertake an Elective Term in the medical program in which I am enrolled; and
• I have maintained a course GPA of 5.0 or above at the time of application.

If you are a successful applicant of this scholarship you will receive $4,000 paid in 1 instalment after acceptance of the award. Please allow up to 6 weeks for payment.

Prior to completing an application, you should carefully read the Scholarship Rules below. Applicants wanting to apply for this scholarship must attach the following documents:

• A written statement outlining the proposed clinical attachment (max 800 words);
• A personal statement outlining the following (max 1000 words)
  • Why you are interested in orthopaedic surgery;
  • What have you done to demonstrate this interest;
  • Your proposed career plans addressing the needs of under served populations in keeping with the College's mission;
• A letter of support from your proposed supervisor; and
• Any other supporting documentation that would assist the Selection Committee in developing an opinion as to the merit of the application.

When applying for a scholarship it is very important that you answer all the questions and include all relevant documents.  Your application and relevant documents must be submitted before the closing date. If an application is incomplete, it will not be considered.

Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation it has been received. After the closing date it will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee who will rank your application against others who have applied.

Introduction

The Australian Orthopaedic Association and James Cook University scholarship is jointly offered by AOA and James Cook University. The scholarship will be awarded annually to an undergraduate medical student with an exceptional academic record and will assist in funding a supervised orthopaedic clinical attachment in Australia or overseas.

Nature of the Scholarship

The scholarship will be for $4000 or such amount as the Selection Committee determine from time to time.

Eligibility Criteria

The Australian Orthopaedic Association and James Cook University Scholarship program shall be open to competition among applicants who:

• are domestic students, i.e. Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens and holders of a permanent visa;
• are enrolled in MBBS year 6 in the following year;
• are approved to undertake an Elective Term in the medical program in which they are enrolled; and
• have maintained a course GPA of 5.0 or above at the time of application.

Selection Criteria

The Selection Committee shall, in the exercise of its absolute discretion, afford consideration to the following criteria:

• The content of their written submissions;
• Their Academic performance and professional standing.

Application Procedures

Applications must be submitted on the official application form no later than the date set by the Selection Committee.
Applicants must submit with the official form, where appropriate:

• A written statement outlining their proposed clinical attachment; (max 800 words)
• A personal statement outlining the following (max 1000 words):
  • Why they are interested in orthopaedic surgery;
  • What they have done to demonstrate this interest;
  • Their proposed career plans addressing the needs of underserved populations in keeping with the College’s mission;
• A letter of support from their proposed supervisor; and
• Any other supporting documentation that would assist the Selection Committee in developing an opinion as to the merit of the application.

Applications submitted without the relevant documentation will not be considered.

The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to make such enquiries as to the applicant’s good character and suitability to receive the scholarship, which includes authorisation for the Selection Committee to examine the applicant’s academic record, and seek opinions from relevant members of the academic staff
of this University or any other academic institution.

Selection Process

The award of the scholarship shall be made in the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee, which shall comprise:

• Director of Clinical Studies, Medicine (CHAIR), or nominee,
• Associate Dean of Education, Medicine, or nominee,
• AOA Representative.
• **OR a pool of appropriate JCU representatives

The Selection Committee reserves the right not to award a Scholarship in any year if, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, there is no applicant of sufficient merit to warrant an award.

The Selection Committee will determine all matters relating to the selection of the Scholarship awardee.

Payment

Monies payable to the recipient of an award will be paid in 1 instalment after acceptance of award. Please allow up to 6 weeks for payment.

Conditions of the Scholarship

At the end of the academic year, a written report must be submitted to the scholarships office, the template will be sent to you.

If the holder of an award fails to comply with any of these provisions or any provision relating to a particular award or with any conditions imposed under these provisions or the provisions relating to a particular award, the Council may terminate the award or withhold any further emoluments or take such action as it may deem necessary to enforce compliance with the provision or performance of the condition by the holder.

A student may lodge a request for review of decision in accordance with the provisions of the Student Appeals Policy.

The requirements of the Scholarship shall not make the awarding of the Scholarship conditional upon the recipient providing unremunerated services or products to the donor.

Administration of the Scholarship

The scholarship shall be administered by the College of Medicine and Dentistry on behalf of the Selection Committee.

The funds of the scholarship shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the officer of the University charged with administering the scholarship.

Where there is a fund maintaining the award, the annual value of the award shall be approximately equal to the annual income from the fund.

Income from a fund not expended on the award which it maintains, shall be added to and become part of the fund.

Where an award provides some benefit to the recipient from a body external to the University, or an obligation upon a body external to the University, the University, its servants and agents, shall not be liable for that benefit or obligation.
