Monkman Postgraduate Awards

Monkman Postgraduate Awards is open for you to apply if you are:

• Enrolled in Master of Marine Biology at JCU.
• Enrolled full-time.
• Maintaining a GPA 5.5 or higher
• Undertaking a research project as part of your degree.

Up to $2,500 lumpsum payment upon awarding in student research account.

All award payments will be made into student research accounts.  If a student does not have an account setup yet, they need to request one be setup for them using “Student Account Opening Template”.

Applicants must submit with the official form:

1. Research proposal outlining:
   1. Project Summary
      1. Project title (≤120 characters)
      2. Research question & significance (≤200 words)
      3. Methods & feasibility (≤200 words)
      4. Timeline & milestones (≤200 words)
      5. Risk management (field, lab, ethics/permits, safety) (≤200 words)
      6. Expected outcomes & impact (scientific + potential end-user impact) (≤200 words)
   2. Budget
      1. Line items with categories (travel, fieldwork, consumables, analysis, instrument time)
      2. Amount requested (cap $2,500)
      3. Co-funding (source, amount, status: confirmed/pending)
      4. Budget justification (≤250 words)
   3. Compliance & Integrity
      1. Ethics approval/permit status (Not required / Pending / Approved)
      2. If Approved: Upload letter/ref; If Pending: expected approval date

Applications submitted without the relevant documentation will not be considered.

The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to make such enquires as to the applicant's good character and suitability to receive the grant, which includes authorisation for the Selection Committee to examine the applicant's academic record, and seek opinions from relevant members of the staff of this University or any other academic institution.

Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation it has been received. After the closing date it will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee who will rank your application against others who have applied. Applicants may be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process.

Introduction

Founded in 1981 with an endowment of $60,000 from Mrs Kate Monkman to fund a scholarship to Postgraduate students who are engaged or in a full-time course of research or study in Master of Marine Biology.

This scholarship is subject to the provisions of James Cook University’s Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants Policy.

Selection Process

The award of the scholarship shall be made in the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee, which shall comprise:

• Head, Marine Biology & Aquaculture (Chair), and
• Members as nominated by Chair.

Conditions of the Award

• Student must remain enrolled full-time and maintain 5.5 GPA to receive payment.
• If any funds unspent at end of project, they will be returned to the awarding fund.
• Students should acknowledge the funding source in published works as “Monkman Postgraduate Award”.
• A student may lodge a request for review of decision in accordance with the provisions of the Student Complaints Policy and Procedures.

Administration of the Award

The award shall be administered by Scholarships Office of the University, on behalf of the Selection Committee.

The funds of the scholarship shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the scholarship office.

Where an award provides some benefit to the recipient from a body external to the University, or an obligation upon a body external to the University, the University, its servants, and agents, shall not be liable for that benefit or obligation.
