Greg Garrick Rural Nursing Bursary

The Greg Garrick Rural Nursing Bursary shall be open to competition among candidates who:

• Are a domestic student, i.e. Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens and holders of a permanent visa; and
• Are enrolled in their 2nd year of Nursing Science or Bachelor of Nursing Science Bachelor of Midwifery
• Have a minimum GPA of 4.0 during their first year
• Have resided in a remote location immediately prior to studying (refer to ASGC Remoteness Areas (2016)
  Note: RA4 and RA5 indicates remote area.

Preference will be given to students studying full time.

The value of the scholarship will be $2,000 or such amount as the Fund administrator determines from time to time. Paid in one instalment after census date of the Study Period in which the award was made. Please allow up to 6 weeks after census date for payment.

Applicants must submit, where appropriate:

• A written statement of no more than 500 words outlining:
  • Your background and how will this scholarship benefit you with your study?
  • What strengths do you believe you possess, having come from a rural area?
  • What do you believe are the three major health related issues currently facing rural communities in Australia?
  • What are your career goals once you have completed your course?
• Proof of Rural residence prior to study (minimum of 2 years evidence required); refer to examples of supporting documentation for further detail

When applying for a scholarship it is very important that you answer all the questions and include all relevant documents.  Your application and relevant documents must be submitted before the closing date. If an application is incomplete, it will not be considered.

The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to make such enquiries as to the applicant’s good character and suitability to receive the scholarship, which includes authorisation for the Selection Committee to examine the applicant’s academic record, and seek opinions from relevant members of the academic staff of this University or any other academic institution.

Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility, and you will receive an email confirmation it has been received. After the closing date it will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee who will rank your application against others who have applied.

Introduction

In memory of Greg Garrick, a trust was established with the Qld Community Foundation to distribute the interest earned by the trust through the QCF annual program. When Anglo American announced intentions to sell up all Australian assets and exit the country arrangements were required that did not depend on their continued involvement with the Foundation. QCF’s advice was to establish an annual bursary that QCF administers.

Greg Garrick was a valued employee of Anglo Coal. Following his passing in 2005, his employer (now known as Anglo American) created the Greg Garrick Foundation Sub Fund with a seed funding investment of $40,000, in his memory. In 2012, Anglo American chose to distribute that income to James Cook University for the purposes of a scholarship.

The Greg Garrick Rural Nursing Bursary is awarded annually to the most promising student studying in the area of Nursing Science, Nursing or Midwifery at James Cook University.

The Greg Garrick Foundation has so far donated over $20,000 towards scholarships aimed at increasing the number of nurses in rural areas, positively benefiting communities across rural Queensland.

This scholarship is subject to the provisions of James Cook University’s Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants Policy.

Value and Payment of the Bursary

Selection criteria

The selection criteria are:

• The character of the candidate for the award; and
• Content of the written statement; and
• Evidence of having resided in a rural area immediately prior to starting university.
• Any other criteria that the Selection Committee deems appropriate, including whether the candidate has, or will receive any other scholarship assistance during their studies.

Application procedures

Applications must be submitted through the official channel no later than close date for the year in which the award is to be made.

Applications submitted without the relevant documentation will not be considered.

The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to make such enquiries as to the applicant’s good character and suitability to receive the scholarship, which includes authorisation for the Selection Committee to examine the applicant’s academic record, and seek opinions from relevant members of the academic staff of this University or any other academic institution.

Selection process

The award of the scholarship shall be made in the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee, which shall comprise:

• Dean, College of Healthcare Science (Chair), or nominee;
• Head of Nursing and Midwifery, or nominee
• Clinical Nursing Placement Coordinator, or nominee.
• Other members deemed appropriate, as determined by the Chair.

The Selection Committee reserves the right not to award a Scholarship in any year if, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, there is no candidate of sufficient merit to warrant an award.

The Selection Committee will determine all matters relating to the selection of the Scholarship awardee.

Conditions of the scholarship

At the end of the academic year, a written report must be submitted to the scholarships office, the template will be sent to you.

If the recipient defers their study, the recipient will no longer be eligible for the award. Where an award is terminated pursuant to the provisions to this clause it may be awarded to another suitable applicant.

If the holder of an award fails to comply with any of these provisions, the Selection Committee may terminate the award or withhold any further payments or take such action as it may deem necessary to enforce compliance with the provision or performance of the condition by the holder.

A student may lodge a request for review of decision in accordance with the provisions of the Student Appeals Policy.

The requirements of the Scholarship shall not make the awarding of the Scholarship conditional upon the recipient providing unremunerated services or products to the donor.

In the event that the recipient suspends their study, the scholarship shall be suspended.

Administration of the scholarship

The scholarship shall be administered by the Scholarships Office, on behalf of the Selection Committee.

The funds of the scholarship shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the officer of the University charged with administering the scholarship.

Where there is a fund maintaining the award, the annual value of the award shall be approximately equal to the annual income from the fund.

Income from a fund not expended on the award which it maintains, shall be added to and become part of the fund.

Where an award provides some benefit to the recipient from a body external to the University, or an obligation upon a body external to the University, the University, its servants and agents, shall not be liable for that benefit or obligation.
