Robert Logan Memorial Grant

Established in 1975 from a bequest from the estate of the late Dr Robert Logan, Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry at the University from 1968 to 1973, the income derived from the bequest maintains the awards.

Nature of the Grant

The value of the travelling and research grant will be determined by the Selection Committee (up to $14,000 annually). The grant will provide assistance to honours and post-graduate students in The Academy conducting research in the field of Biochemistry in the following ways:

• travelling grants to attend biochemically-oriented meetings or conferences approved by the Selection Committee;
• travelling grants to visit other Australian university Departments with similar interests, where this travel is essential to further the candidates' research work; or
• grants to assist honours and post-graduate students in the purchase of research items necessary for their research work.

Eligibility Criteria

The Robert Logan Memorial Grant shall be open to candidates who are:

• full time or part time Honours or Postgraduate research students in the Academy, study in the field of Biochemistry; and
• not previous recipients of this grant

Selection Criteria

The Selection Committee will award the grant under the following criteria:

• content of their written submission;
• character of the applicant; and
• any other criteria that the Selection Committee deems appropriate, including whether the candidate has, or will receive any other scholarship assistance during their studies.

Application Procedures

Applicants must attach to the official form:

• A written statement (no more than 500 words) outlining purpose and use of the funding. Include a statement naming your primary and secondary supervisor/s.
• An itemised budget listing the expected expenditure for application. Including, but not exclusive to, all proposed travel expenses, conference costs, equipment purchase quotes, and other research related expenses.
• Curriculum vitae; and
• A copy of their academic record.

When applying for a scholarship it is very important that you answer all the questions and include all relevant documents.  Your application and relevant documents must be submitted before the closing date. If an application is incomplete, it will not be considered.

The applicant authorises the Selection Committee to make such enquiries as to the applicant's good character and suitability to receive the grant, which includes authorisation for the Selection Committee to examine the applicant's academic record, and seek opinions from relevant members of the academic staff of this University, or any other academic institution.

Selection Process

The award of the grant will be made at the absolute discretion of the Selection and shall comprise of:

• Head, Biomedicine (Chair), or nominee;
• Associate Dean of Research Education from relevant College applicants are enrolled; and
• Associate Dean of Research from relevant College applicants are enrolled.

NOTE: Supervisors of applicants cannot be on the selection panel, if position of ADRE or ADR is an applicant primary or secondary supervisor, an alternative nominee will need to be provided by Chair.

The Selection Committee reserves the right:

• not to award a grant in any year;
• to award a grant for a period of one or more years; and
• to extend a grant for the existing recipient.

The Selection Committee may require applicants to undertake an interview as part of their application.

The Selection Committee will determine all matters relating to the grant.

Conditions of the Grant

Funding will be paid in one lump sum payment into Student Research account at JCU, will not be paid into a student’s personal account.

Administration of the Grant

The grant shall be administered by the Scholarships Office, on behalf of the Selection Committee.

Moneys payable in any year to the holder of an award shall be paid at such times and in such amounts as the Committee deems appropriate to the circumstance of each case.

Where an award provides some benefit to the recipient from a body external to the University, or an obligation upon a body external to the University, the University, its servants and agents, shall not be liable for that benefit or obligation.
