Professor Colin Simpfendorfer
Theme: Fisheries Science and Management
+61 7 4781 5287
Colin has more than 25 years of experience in researching sharks, and has published extensively in the scientific literature on shark biology, ecology, fisheries and conservation.
Dr Gregory Maes
Theme: Fisheries Science and Management
Gregory Maes is mainly interested in conservation and population genomic approaches enabling the understanding of connectivity, demographic resilience and potential for local adaptation in natural freshwater and marine fish populations. To achieve this he is using various research tools, such as morphometrics, genomics, otolith microchemistry, hydrodynamic-genetic modelling and geovisualisation techniques.
Associate Professor Jennifer Blair
Theme: Aquaculture and Animal Health
Associate Professor Blair actively engages in sharing research results and novel technologies with students, industry, and scientists through workshops and practical training. She is passionate about equipping students and doing research that both contribute to the sustainable and profitable growth of the aquaculture industry.
Dr Kate Hutson
Theme: Aquaculture and Animal Health
Kate's researches aquatic animal parasitology issues that threaten wild, farmed and ornamental fishes. Her work integrates parasite species discovery and biology with practical techniques to deliver tangible outcomes for industry.
Associate Professor Katheline Hua
Theme: Aquaculture and Animal Health
Katheline's primary research interest is to optimal fish feed formulations to promote fish growth and nutrient utilisation. One of her expertise areas is nutritional modelling.
Dr David Mills
Theme: Fisheries Science and Management
+61 7 4781 6747
David has been a visiting scholar at JCU since 2011, and has led the development of the WorldFish research program in Timor-Leste, employing 30 staff based in Dili. David is also a principal investigator on the Illuminating Hidden Harvests report – a global collaboration involving over 800 people to provide a comprehensive overview of the global contributions of small-scale fisheries to the SDGs.
Professor Rocky de Nys
Theme: Aquaculture and Animal Health
Rocky manages industry partnerships that take the outcomes of aquaculture research to deliver innovative products and processes ranging from food products to fertilisers, biological carbon capture and storage using biochar.
Dr Ria Fitriana
Theme: Livelihoods, Equity and Governance
Dr Ria Fitriana has been working in marine biodiversity governance and coastal community’s livelihoods for over than twenty years. She specializes in livelihoods of coastal communities, traditional use right and access for fishing, gender role in fisheries and community based economic development.
Dr Meira Mizrahi
Theme: Livelihoods, Equity and Governance
Meira’s research interests lie in developing approaches to integrate socioeconomic dimensions into Marine Protected Area (MPA) planning, with a particular focus on community-based management areas in the global tropics. This includes experimenting with conservation planning tools that draw from socioeconomic datasets, and transitioning these into real-life implementation.
Dr Sally Lau
Dr Sally Lau is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, with research interests in Population genomics, Antarctic benthic ecology and evolution and Antarctic ice sheet collapse.
