JCU is dedicated to expanding educational opportunity across northern Queensland and beyond. We provide practical support and inclusive learning environments that empower students who are first in their family, from regional and remote areas, or from diverse cultural backgrounds. Our approach ensures graduates are skilled, confident and ready to contribute to their communities. Through this commitment, JCU drives long-term social and economic change.

Improving Opportunity for Women and Girls

Open Education Program

James Cook University (JCU) significantly expanded its Open Education Program in 2024 with the launch of the Textbook Affordability Project. This initiative increases free public access to high-quality learning materials—prioritizing zero-cost options for first-year core subjects—through open textbooks, curated reading lists, and flexible digital resources. The project aims to remove financial barriers and promote equity in education for learners both within and beyond the university community.
