Law Seminar Series - Torres Strait Island Traditional Child Rearing Practices.
Tuesday 5 September 2023, 10.00am-11.00am Join us for a captivating presentation with Commissioner C’Zarke Maza from the Office of the Commissioner Meriba Omasker Kaziw Kazipa and explore the ground-breaking cultural recognition of Torres Strait Islander traditional child rearing practice. Commissioner Maza will discuss the significance of this milestone in preserving and honouring the rich cultural heritage of the Torres Strait Islander community as well as offering insights into the historic journey and ongoing efforts to embrace and celebrate diversity. View the Presentation Slides HERE Commissioner C’Zarke Maza LL.M is a descendant of the Meriam people of Mer (Murray Island) in the Torres Strait Islands and Yidinjdji people from the coast of Cairns. He was appointed as the inaugural Commissioner (Meriba Omasker Kaziw Kazipa) in July 2021 and works to bring historic, legal recognition of Torres Strait Island traditional child rearing practices.
Commissioner Maza was first admitted as a solicitor and barrister in 2002 and has extensive experience in law, advocating for, and engaging with, Torres Strait Islander people. As a Torres Strait Islander person, C’Zarke brings with him a deep and inherent understanding of the diversity and sensitivity of traditional child rearing practice.
