Law Seminar Series - Human Rights Law (Coronial Inquests)
Thursday 3 August 2023, 12.30pm - 1.30pm Join us for an insightful presentation from Michael Murray, Supervising Solicitor at Townsville Community Legal as he sheds light on the pressing issues surrounding high-profile coronial inquests in Queensland. Michael will delve into the crucial intersection between human rights and the coronial jurisdiction, exploring how examining failures within the system can serve as a powerful tool to drive systemic and critical reform. Don't miss this opportunity to gain invaluable insights and be part of the conversation for positive transformation in our society. View the Presentation Slides HERE Michael Murray is the Supervising Solicitor at Townsville Community Law, providing specialised legal advice and representation across a wide range of areas. His experience extends over general civil law, family and domestic violence law, social security and administrative law, consumer protection and insurance law, elder abuse and financial exploitation, coronial investigations, and inquests, as well as matters with a human rights and social justice focus.
With a primary focus on coronial investigations and inquests, Michael has been a staunch advocate for bereaved family members, representing their interests in cases involving deaths in care, mental health-related deaths, deaths occurring during police operations or in police custody, domestic violence-related deaths, and missing persons matters. Michael has made significant contributions to law reform through the submission process, ensuring that the voices of the disadvantaged are heard and their rights protected.
In addition to Michael’s role at Townsville Community Law, he also serves as a lecturer in Clinical Legal Studies at James Cook University, sharing their expertise and knowledge with the next generation of legal professionals. Passionate about the legal profession and North Queensland, Michael actively promotes "good law and good lawyers" while championing the interests of the profession in the region.
Michael has also had extensive involvement in various boards, including their role as Secretary of the North Queensland Law Association Inc., President of the Townsville District Law Association Inc., and Board Member & Secretary of Economic Justice Australia. Prior to his work in the community legal sector, Michael gained valuable experience in private practice, specialising in property law, rural and residential sales and leasing, as well as general civil and criminal litigation. In 2021, Michael was awarded the Queensland Law Society’s Emerging Leader Award.
