JCU Legal Studies Conference Engages Cairns High School Students in Vital Legal Topics
The Nguma-bada (Smithfield) Campus played host to a gathering of over 100 Year 11 and 12 students on Thursday, 17th August, at the annual JCU Legal Studies Conference. The event provided a platform for students to delve into crucial legal topics through guest presentations and a dynamic Panel Discussion session.
The conference covered a spectrum of legal subjects, featuring guest presentations on Criminal Law, the recently enacted Voluntary Assisted Dying legislation, and the concept of the Voice. A noteworthy addition to this year's conference was the introduction of a Panel Discussion session, allowing students to actively engage by posing questions on a variety of subjects, including youth justice, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), vaping, and the Voice.
Special thanks go out to the distinguished guest presenters and panellists who enriched the conference with their expertise:
Dr. Bernie Singleton Senior, who commenced the event with a Welcome to Country.
Mr. Simon Bright, Regional Manager at Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander Legal Service (ATSILS).
Dr. Lea Merone, Senior Medical Administration Registrar, Public Health Physician, and Health Economist at Cairns Hinterland Hospital and Health Service.
Ms. Trish Price, Senior Lawyer at Legal Aid Qld (Cairns).
Professor Gary Meyers, Lecturer at JCU.
Ms. Michelle Friday-Mooka, Manager of Community Relations at Cape York Land Council.
Mr. Joel Murgha, Legal Officer at Cape York Land Council & Youth Advisory Committee Representative for the Voice to Parliament.
The JCU Legal Studies Conference proved to be an enriching experience for students, fostering a deeper understanding of contemporary legal issues and promoting interactive discussions among the future legal minds in attendance.
