Additional staff graduation information
Staff who are JCU graduates may request the loan of a JCU gown to wear at a ceremony (PhD, Masters, Honours and Bachelor).
The academic dress loan gown service has been outsourced to a private provider. As such, you will be required to sign for the academic dress when you collect and return the academic dress.
Borrowers are responsible for the replacement of gowns not recorded as having been returned.
Graduates of other institutions may borrow a black gown and mortar board.
Register for the graduation procession will open closer to the event.
Collection of loan gowns
Please collect your loan gown up to two hours prior to the commencement of each ceremony from:
- Townsville: The Palm Room, Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre
- Cairns: Sheridan Street Foyer, Cairns Convention Centre
Prior to each graduation ceremony a JCU cultural sash presentation ceremony will be held for graduating indigenous students.
- Cairns: Sheridan Street Foyer, Cairns Convention Centre
- Townsville: The Palm Room. Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre
Each sashing ceremony will commence 30 minutes before the commencement of each graduation ceremony.
Staff are cordially invited to attend the cultural sash presentation ceremonies.
Graduation Ceremony Procession assembly points:
- Cairns: Sheridan Street Foyer, Cairns Convention Centre
- Townsville: The Palm Room, Townsville Convention and Entertainment Centre
Register for the graduation procession will open closer to the event.
Please be robed no later than 30 minutes prior to the commencement of each ceremony.
The Graduation Ceremony Procession will commence assembling approximately 15 minutes prior to the commencement of the ceremony.
Each ceremony will commence promptly at the scheduled times.

The procession enters the auditorium in the following order:
- Ceremony Marshal
- Staff
- JCU Council Members
- Members of the Official Party
National Anthem
Protocol requires you to take off your trencher/bonnet during the playing of the National Anthem.
All staff are invited to volunteer at JCU Graduation ceremonies, with supervisor approval. There are a number of ways that you can assist at the events, for example, you can help our graduates register, assist in gowning, or provide guest services.
