Returning Books
After-hours:
Return items to the Library via the book return chutes near the main entrance. Items returned via the external returns chutes are processed the next business day.
During library opening times:
Use the Express Lending unit to "check in" items and place books in the appropriate return chute.
N.B.: You can place items in the external returns chutes during our opening hours, but they will not be processed as "returned" until the next day business day.
Items left on trolleys, desks or shelves – or placed in the wrong return chute – are not recorded as returned and, if checked out in your name, may attract overdue fees.
It is your responsibility to ensure the item has been returned correctly on time.
Renewing Items
Items will automatically renew unless a hold request is placed by another patron or your account expires.
A courtesy email will be sent reminding you to return any items that cannot be renewed, informing you of the due date by which the items must be returned. The Library is not responsible for non-receipt of messages. You cannot dispute a penalty because you have not received a notice.
You may wish to renew an item manually in order to move the due date before someone requests it (for example, if you are going to be on prac). This will set the due date three weeks from the date you renewed it. To do so:
Via the Web
- Go to My Library Account
- JCU students and staff enter your JCU login ID and password
- Community members enter your library barcode and pin number. The first time you access your account you will be prompted to reset your password.
- Click on Loans
- Click the checkbox next to any item you want to renew
- Click Renew
In Person
- Items can be renewed with student ID or library card at the Express Lending machine. You do not need to have the books with you.
- Alternatively, present your ID/borrower card to Library staff.
By Phone
Phone the Library (1800 246 446 free call, or extension 15500 in TSV or 21777 in CNS – select option 4) and be ready to quote your borrower or student ID number.
Please note:
- It is your responsibility to record your due dates and be prepared to return the books when due.
- Items requested by another borrower are unable to be renewed.
