When you enrol to study, you’ll need to consider other study-related expenses and living costs
While your tuition fees cover the cost of your course, there are additional expenses to consider when getting ready for university life. These include textbooks, equipment, accommodation, transport, and the general cost of living – each of which can vary depending on your course and which JCU campus you study at.
Whether you're heading to Townsville, Cairns, Brisbane, Singapore, or one of JCU’s regional centres, it’s important to plan for the full picture.
Study materials
Depending on your course, you may need to buy textbooks and other study materials. While this can vary greatly, we estimate these costs to be anywhere from $500 - $1000 per year.
JCU’s Textbook Affordability Project
JCU understands that the cost of textbooks is an extra burden for students, so we’re doing our best to ease cost-of-living pressures. Some core subject textbooks are available for free from the library. To find out if your textbooks are available, take a look at the Textbook Affordability Project.
Other equipment and tools
Some courses might have required or recommended special equipment, like lab coats, art materials or scientific calculators. You’ll be given a required materials list before your first trimester begins.
Cost of living
While studying at JCU, it's important to factor in the cost of living alongside your tuition fees. Your living expenses will vary depending on several factors — including the campus location, your lifestyle, and the type of accommodation you choose.
Below you'll find a general guide to living costs in Brisbane, Australia. Keep in mind that expenses may differ significantly at our rural campuses and at JCU Singapore.
Expense | Brisbane (avg/month) |
|---|---|
Rent (shared) | $700–$1000 |
Utilities & internet | $120–$180 |
Food & groceries | $350–$500 |
Public transport | $100–$160 |
Phone plan | $30–$50 |
Recreation & personal | $200–$350 |
Total | $1500–$2240 |
Additional information for international students
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
When you enrol to study in Australia as an international student, you’ll be required to pay for Overseas Student Health Cover. This is a type of insurance that covers your costs when using public health services like doctors. You can learn more about it on our Overseas Student Health Cover page.
Financial support and scholarships
If you are experiencing financial challenges that get in the way of your studies, JCU has a range of scholarships and financial support options. You can take a look at our scholarships page for more information.
