The Place of AI in Higher Education Teaching, Learning and Assessment

This project explores how generative artificial intelligence (AI) is being used in teaching, learning, and assessment within the College of Arts, Society and Education (CASE) at James Cook University (JCU). As AI tools rapidly become part of higher education, there is a need to better understand how they are currently used, what challenges they present, and how they can be integrated in ways that are ethical, effective, and meaningful for both staff and students.

The study focuses on the experiences and perspectives of academic staff. The research will explore key questions such as how AI is currently being used, what staff see as the benefits and risks (including academic integrity, fairness, and environmental impact), and what support or guidance they need. It also considers broader issues, such as how AI may reflect cultural biases and why it is important to teach students to use these tools critically and responsibly.

The findings will be used to develop practical strategies, professional learning opportunities, and clearer policy guidance for AI use at JCU. Ultimately, the project aims to support a thoughtful and transparent approach to AI in higher education, helping educators feel confident in using these tools while ensuring that student learning remains authentic, inclusive, and meaningful.
