Earth Sciences represent one of the core research strengths of JCU. Our research in economic geology, geochemistry and isotope geology, palaeontology and sedimentology, petrology, and tectonics is internationally recognised. James Cook University provides access to the outstanding Precambrian to recent geology of tropical Australia, Papua New Guinea and the South-West Pacific, with easy access to the Great Barrier Reef, and numerous world-class mineral deposits.
Our research is underpinned by the Economic Geology Research Centre and is supported by world-class analytical facilities, including major element, trace element and isotopic analysis, electron microprobe, fluid inclusion analysis, high-pressure experimental petrology, high-performance computer modelling, and the James Kirby research vessel.
The W.C. Lacy Scholarship was established in honour of Bill Lacy, the foundation professor of geology at JCU.
This scholarship is offered on a competitive basis to students who are undertaking or have been accepted into the PhD program in Earth Sciences, and have been awarded or offered a competitive postgraduate scholarship.
