Current JCU candidates may apply to change your research project, in accordance with the HDR Application, Admission and Enrolment Procedure.
Application Instructions
If there have been significant changes to your research topic or Field of Education (FoE) you must submit a new Application for Candidature via MyStudent.
Additional conditions:
- Any JCU-funded scholarships will be transferred. Approval to continue externally funded scholarships remains the responsibility of the HDR candidate.
- EFTSL used will be deducted from the total EFTSL of the new degree
- If approved, the University will issue a formal offer, which must be accepted within the specified timeframe.
- Upon acceptance, you will be withdrawn from the previous degree and enrolled in the new degree.
Applications must be finalised at least three months before your pre-completion due date. Please note the processing time and ensure that applications are submitted timeously to accommodate the processing time.
If your application is approved, you will be required to meet all progression requirements.
Preparing your change of program request
Before submitting your application, you should:
- Confirm that you meet the eligibility requirements (refer to the HDR Application, Admission and Enrolment Procedure).
- Discuss the transfer with your Principal Advisor.
- Gather all required supporting documentation.
- International Candidates must ensure they are compliant with Visa requirements and must inform the Department of Home Affairs of all changes. The previous CoE will be cancelled, and a new CoE will be issued.
Supporting documentation
You will need to upload:
- Updated CV
Academic transcripts do not need to be resubmitted, as these are already held by the University.
Current JCU candidates may apply to transfer at any time in accordance with the HDR Application, Admission and Enrolment Procedure.
Application Instructions
To apply for a transfer, you must:
- Submit a Request change to HDR course requesting a change of degree, approved by your Principal Advisor.
- Visit the Research Programs and Pathways and Qualifications and Entry Requirements pages for further information on HDR pathway options and eligibility requirements.
Processing time
Change of program requests may take up to four weeks to process. The new program will commence from the date the offer is accepted.
Additional conditions:
- Any JCU-funded scholarships will be transferred to the MPhil program; the duration will be reduced to match the new timelines.
- Approval to continue externally funded scholarships remains the responsibility of the HDR candidate.
- EFTSL consumed during the PhD will be deducted from the total EFTSL of the MPhil.
- If approved, the University will issue a formal offer, which must be accepted within the specified timeframe.
- Upon acceptance, you will be withdrawn from the PhD and enrolled in the MPhil.

Current JCU MPhil candidates who can meet the entry requirements for a PhD may apply for entry to a PhD at any time if there is no significate change of topic, in accordance with the HDR Application, Admission and Enrolment Procedure.
