AWE focuses on clear, effective academic writing and editing, for all academic disciplines. We engage with broadly-applicable ideas around clarity, efficiency, consistency, logic and technical and stylistic correctness. The aim is to provide a forum for discussion about how HDR candidates can achieve their written and spoken communication goals, built upon sound communication principles and practical activities.
Participants will work closely with an experienced academic writer and editor who is also an active researcher (Liz Tynan). To successfully complete the program, you will be expected to provide an extract of your written work for appraisal, then participate in a one-on-one editorial consultation to discuss you writing. AWE completion will enable candidates to claim 16 hours of Professional Development credit, made up of 12 hours of class time, two hours of the AWE Candidate Conference and up to two hours of individual editorial consultation.
This is not an English language program, and candidates from all language backgrounds are welcome. However, some candidates who have English as an Additional Language (EAL) may wish to access additional assistance relevant to their circumstances through AWE. The individual consultation can be used to address issues of interest to EAL candidates, where we talk through the challenges of operating in a different language and find ways together to make the writing process as productive and effective as possible.
