Conference Structure

Our conference will feature traditional paper presentation sessions where participants can present their research in various formats, including theoretical paper, literature review, conceptual papers, case studies, and full paper presentations. These sessions offer a platform for researchers, scholars, and practitioners to showcase their work and engage in critical discussions with peers in their respective fields. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about cutting-edge research and new ideas, as well as share their knowledge and expertise with others. We encourage participants to submit their work for presentation and join us in this dynamic exchange of ideas.

In addition to traditional presentation sessions, our BEMAS conference offers a dedicated poster presentation stream that provides a unique opportunity to showcase your research in a visually engaging format. Share your findings and insights through eye-catching posters and engage in meaningful discussions with fellow presenters and attendees. Our expert reviewers will provide feedback on the quality and originality of your work. The poster presentation stream offers a dynamic and interactive platform for scholarly exchange, allowing you to contribute to the diverse discourse of the conference while expanding your network. Don't miss out on this exciting opportunity to present your research in a dynamic and visual way through our poster presentation stream.

Poster guidelines and formatting requirement are coming soon !

In addition to the main conference, we are excited to offer a free pre-conference workshop for participants who have paid the full registration fee. The workshop is designed to provide assistance to participants in developing their papers and presentations. Led by experts in the field, this workshop will provide valuable guidance on research methodologies, paper writing techniques, and effective presentation skills.

This workshop can be particularly useful for PhD students, early career researchers, or researchers from research organizations who may be looking for additional guidance on their work. Participants are required to submit a pre-developed paper, which should be structured like a full paper (i.e., with sections such as Introduction, Methods, Data, Discussion, etc.) and be between 2500-3000 words in length (excluding references and appendices). During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to present outlines of their papers, receive feedback from the experts, and participate in small group review and methods discussion sessions. We believe this workshop will greatly benefit participants and enhance their overall conference experience.

Registration deadline for pre-conference workshop: 10 July 2023
Accepted participants will be notified by: 15 July 2023

Recognising excellence in research, our conference presents awards for the Best Paper and Best Poster. Outstanding papers and posters will be selected by our esteemed panel of reviewers based on their originality, quality, and contribution to the field.

In addition, all presenters will receive a Certificate of Participation as a token of appreciation for their valuable contributions to the conference. This certificate can be a valuable addition to your professional portfolio, highlighting your participation in a reputable academic event and recognizing your scholarly endeavors.

We understand that every participant has different goals and preferences, so we offer two presentation options: full paper submission or presentation-only participation. Participants who choose the presentation only option will have the opportunity to share their research findings and engage in discussions with other experts in their field.

For those who submit a full paper, we are thrilled to announce that the conference proceedings will be published by the Journal of Research in Economics (JRE), a Platinum Open Access journal that employs a rigorous double-blind peer-review process for all submitted papers. JRE offers a multidisciplinary approach, making it an excellent platform for publishing research on the latest trends, challenges, and innovations in the fields of business, economics, management, sustainability, AI, and resilience. JRE has a Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License, which allows users to share, copy, and redistribute the material in any medium or format for any purpose, even commercially.

JCU

Papers that pass the rigorous double-blind peer-review process of JRE will be published free of charge. We are committed to promoting accessibility and inclusivity and ensuring that research outputs are available to all. By publishing papers in JRE, participants have the opportunity to showcase their research to a wider audience, without incurring any fees or charges.

Please note that additional journals may be associated with the conference in the future, and any updates will be announced on the conference website. We encourage all interested parties to check the website frequently for any announcements.

Similar to previous years, we have decided to host a hybrid conference that allows both in-person and remote participation, particularly for international delegates. This will provide participants with the flexibility to experience the conference at their own pace and convenience. To facilitate this, presentations will be available in both live-stream and pre-recorded formats. Background reading materials, including full papers, posters, and source files, will be made available to all participants.

For those who are able to travel to Cairns, physical function rooms will be reserved for the event, and catering services will be provided. We are committed to making this conference accessible and engaging for all participants, and we look forward to welcoming you to this exciting event.

Additional Information for Authors and Presenters

Presentation format

Presentations are either live stream or pre-recorded video presentations. Please note that pre-recorded presentations are to be created by the authors. Further information on creating the video will be sent following registration. The length of the live stream or pre-recorded presentations should not be longer than 25 minutes.

Presentation Guidelines

You are required to prepare PowerPoint slides (or PDF) to support your presentation. To facilitate a smooth transition between speakers, you will need to load your presentation onto the computer before your stream. Please make sure you email a copy of your slides to the session chair at least 48 hours prior to the conference. If you attend the conference in person, please make sure you also bring your presentation on a data stick or other portable memory devices. You will not generally be able to plug your own laptop into the conference projection system.

If you require special technology for your presentation, please email our conference coordinator Ms Dwi Sugiharti (Dwi.sugiharti@my.jcu.edu.au), as soon as you can, and we will do our best to assist you.

All sessions will be recorded

Guidelines for Academic and PhD Presentations

The time allocated for a presentation is 20 minutes, with a further 5 minutes allowed for Q&A and discussion. Most presentations are organised according to a predictable pattern. They have three main stages: introduction, body and conclusion. The followings provide some general structure to assist you in preparing your presentation:

  • A title slide – Title of your paper, authors names and affiliations
  • A background slide where you set the scene of your research for the audience and provide the importance of your research
  • One slide with the hypothesis/research question you want to investigate (if your paper is a review paper, you need to express that clearly)
  • 2 or 3 slides covering your research design and methods
  • You should not require any more than an absolute maximum of 15 slides (including the title slide and thank you slide)– this would mean talking to each slide for about 90 seconds on average
  • It is generally distracting to the audience to have too many slides in a short presentation
  • Do not make your slides too wordy– you want the audience to listen to you and not to be reading your slides!
  • Fonts: Widely used fonts such as Arial, Calibri or Helvetica is recommended for clarity and compatibility. Confirm a font size of at least 24 points for body text and 36 to 40 points for headings. Light-coloured text on a dark background is advised, or dark-coloured text on a light background is fine. Avoid using red or green ink font. The maximum number of lines in text slides is no more than 6 or 7.

Remote Presentation: Opening and closing remarks

It is important to add an introduction and closing to your presentation. Below are a few suggestions you can utilise.

INTRODUCTION: you can start your presentation by introducing yourself and your affiliation:

  • Hello everyone, my name is < your name>, and I am < your position such as lecture, PhD candidate, professor, etc.>  at <your affiliation and your Country>. The topic of my presentation is < your topic>. If you have any questions or comments during the course of the presentation, please feel free to type them in the CHAT window.

CLOSING:  So that concludes my presentation for today, Thank you for listening and I would be happy to take a few questions now.

Remote presentations: Technicalities

If you are presenting remotely (virtually), here are some hints and tips to ensure you run a successful presentation:

  • Test your Zoom connection ahead of time, especially your audio and video
  • It is highly recommended that you use a USB microphone (rather than inbuilt microphones) for audio clarity
  • Ensure your microphone, headphone, or speakerphone is near you.
  • Mute your Zoom session or phone when not in use.
  • Avoid bright lights and windows behind you.
  • Good light in front of you (on your face) will provide for a better image.
  • Test any virtual backgrounds that you may be utilising to ensure there are no video irregularities.
  • Webcam: Cameras should be placed at face level, ideally 70cm away from your seated film position
  • Set up your space in a quiet area

Zoom

Once the participants receive their Zoom invitations, we recommend they test their Zoom connections by going to https://zoom.us/test where they can test their video and audio to make sure they can both hear and see a Zoom test meeting.

Should there be difficulties with the connection we recommend the following:

Use a network cable to connect to the Internet not wireless as wireless can be affected by other devices particularly those in a home environment.

If the connection is still unsatisfactory with the image breaking up in pixels, it is advisable to turn the video camera off, the video camera uses up most of the total bandwidth requirements.

If there are still problems with running audio-only or audio and screen sharing, connect from another location.

On the actual day, each participant will click on the click contained in the invitation to join the Zoom event.

We invite full research papers, practitioner papers, research notes, scoping/systematic literature review papers, and case studies. Papers that are accepted following the peer review process, and are presented in the conference will have an opportunity to be published in one of the associated journals (subjected to successful peer review process usually handled by the journals) or will appear in the conference proceeding.
